Tom Selleck’s Next Role? It’s Not What You Think

As a film critic, I’ve just learned that the series finale of “Blue Bloods” was filmed over two years ago, wrapping up production in June 2024. This means Tom Selleck enjoyed a well-deserved break from Hollywood, but it seems he’s back in action now, and his next TV role looks like the perfect fit – a project I (and many fans) have eagerly anticipated!

In 2023, CBS decided to cancel “Blue Bloods”, and for several months afterward, Tom Selleck, one of the show’s main advocates, openly criticized this decision. He believed the network was wrong for cancelling it due to its impressive viewership numbers. Unfortunately, his arguments didn’t persuade the network, and “Blue Bloods” ended peacefully in December 2024.

It’s been announced that CBS plans to bring the Reagans back on TV in a new show, but this time it will focus on Donnie Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan, rather than Frank Reagan played by Tom Selleck. This suggests that Selleck’s schedule is now clear for him to reprise his popular role as Jesse Stone in another project.

What Is Jesse Stone, Anyway?

You might recall Jesse Stone, a character that holds a special place in Selleck’s heart. He was developed from a series of detective novels written by Robert B. Parker. In the early 2000s, the actor himself starred in and produced nine films based on these books, with the final one making its television premiere as recently as 2015.

Jesse is typically portrayed as a solitary, somewhat melancholic character who primarily keeps a canine friend for company. He frequently witnesses the ugly aspects of human nature. The series meticulously depicts his struggle with alcohol and self-control, although he maintains a high level of professionalism and restraint during his work hours.

When Tom Selleck was considering the conclusion of his CBS series, he expressed interest in reprising the role of Jesse Stone. It’s wonderful to see that he was sincere about this intention. Lately, he has hinted at wanting to act in a “western-style” production for his next project. Given that he is now 80 and past traditional retirement age, I must admit I had doubts whether such an energetic character as Stone would appear on his future resume.

Although it hasn’t been officially verified yet, there’s an addition to his IMDB page suggesting that another film featuring the long-standing character might be on the horizon. While we should still approach this news with caution, I must admit I am eagerly awaiting more details about it, as a 10th movie sounds quite promising.

Without a doubt, the traditional Reagan family dinner scenes will shift in the upcoming spinoff, which leads me to ponder what a world of Blue Bloods might look like without some of its long-standing elements that made it such a hit for CBS. It’s possible that other CBS shows may face challenges as well, considering the list we’re tracking of canceled series in 2025 and with the network TV spring sweeps fast approaching.
