Tomb Raider Dev Downsizes With 17 Layoffs

I’m a gamer here, and let me tell you, it’s sad to hear about my favorite studio, Crystal Dynamics, having to let go of 17 team members due to some strategic cuts. They’ve given us amazing games like Tomb Raider and even worked on the reboot of Perfect Dark. Hopefully, this won’t affect their future projects negatively.

As stated by the studio, this decision was taken to ensure that our present operations better match with the studio’s long-term prosperity.

The company made it clear that the reorganization within the team wasn’t due to the commitment or talent of those involved, but rather a strategic adjustment in response to the intensifying competition within the video game industry.

Crystal Dynamics recently announced some job cuts through a post on their social media platforms, labeling it as a “tough choice” and providing “severance packages and job search assistance” for those impacted by the decision.

These possible layoffs at Crystal Dynamics might affect just a fraction of their workforce, which is over 300 strong, but they’re indicative of a broader pattern of job losses sweeping through the industry. It’s not the first time that Crystal Dynamics has resorted to downsizing.

In 2023, Embracer Group underwent a reorganization that resulted in the termination of some marketing team members at the studio.

Following Square Enix’s handover of the studio in 2022, Embracer Group has been consistently making adjustments to optimize their operations by trimming down various subsidiaries.

Back in the early days of this year, the word came down from the company that more job cuts were on the horizon, all aimed at enhancing shareholder returns. Simultaneously, our studio has been diligently preserving our rich gaming heritage by teaming up with Aspyr to bring back some of our timeless games. We’re talking about titles like Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, which have been remastered for a new generation of gamers to enjoy.

These publications have bridged the time period as fans eagerly anticipate fresh installments in the sequence, especially given that there hasn’t been any new Tomb Raider content since 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The eventual impact of this streamlined method on games like Perfect Dark and Tomb Raider remains to be seen, but at present, the development process appears to be progressing carefully and with a more conservative approach.
