Android enthusiasts have been facing challenges. They not only miss out on exclusive Apple Arcade titles, but also numerous games that are exclusively available on iOS. Although Google Play’s open market offers a vast area for games to thrive through Early Access and other features, many top-tier games fail to appear on the platform.
A wide variety of Android phones and tablets exist, boasting distinct specifications, ranging from high-performance models such as the latest ROG phones, reminiscent of gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch in some aspects, to devices like the Nvidia Shield. As each new generation emerges, we’re steadily approaching console-like graphics on portable gadgets, but we haven’t quite reached that level of quality just yet.
Many games have transitioned effectively from either PC or console to mobile, yet this process can be quite challenging due to the vast variety of mobile hardware configurations. In contrast to developing for a single machine or the top-tier specifications of a PC, game creators must guarantee compatibility across all targeted devices instead.
Regardless of the approach, the charm of holding a richly detailed and immersive experience right in your hands remains captivating. This unexplored market brims with eager consumers who are constantly on the lookout for their next engaging distraction during their daily commutes.
It’s our opinion that these ten games, which are available on Steam and gaming consoles, are ideal for playing on the move – on your Android smartphone or tablet.
1 Ballionaire
Ballionaire is an engaging, dynamic, game resembling pachinko, blending elements that at first glance might seem incongruous. Throughout the game, you’ll be releasing balls onto a pachinko board in an attempt to accumulate enough wealth to offer to a deity. It incorporates elements of chance, strategy similar to poker, and environmental enhancement. As your skill level advances, you will need to strategically apply upgrades that complement each other, enhancing your progress.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel Ballionaire has all the makings of a hit mobile game, similar to how Balatro captured hearts on smartphones. However, at this point, it seems to be confined to PC platforms, which is a bit of a shame as its potential would shine even brighter in the palm of our hands!
2 Tetris Effect
For quite some time now, various Tetris games have been available for mobile devices, yet one significant title remains absent: Tetris Effect. What sets this version apart is its stunning visuals and the way the pixels dance in response to the captivating music that imbues the gameplay with a fresh vitality, breathing new life into a classic game that’s been around since the ’80s. Tetris Effect elevates the simple block-clearing puzzle game into the future. While it might be tricky to play at a competitive level on a portable screen, if they could successfully port the original game, there’s no reason why they couldn’t adapt it for this platform as well.
Last year, the Oculus Quest received Tetris Effect, demonstrating that the game is compatible with Android operating systems, and not just any version, but in VR! Here’s hoping we can enjoy this brilliant title from the Google Play Store soon.

3 Palworld
At some point, Palworld captivated everyone’s attention, with many trying their hand at it. Despite the scarcity of large-scale open-world games on mobile platforms, Palworld could potentially introduce a fresh perspective similar to Infinity Nikki. It features unique creatures to capture, systems for resource production, and an abundance of items to collect or engage in battles. Playing Palworld on a mobile device would be quite enjoyable.
4 Persona 5 Royal
The character we know as Persona has made significant progress from its initial series release. In the newest version, you’ll find an engaging story centered around Joker, who leads a life that deviates from the norm as a high school student in Tokyo. This game offers a well-developed relationship and job system, allowing Joker to nurture his social connections just as much as he ventures into extraordinary realms.
In this dating sim adventure, a distinctive battle system based on turns provides a familiar RPG structure. However, it’s the Personas – inspired by legendary outlaws and rogues – that introduce an engaging combat twist, enhancing your character’s abilities through their creatures and personalities. Essentially, you’ll be exploring dungeons while navigating relationships in this compelling social-RPG from Atlus.

5 Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game
The tunes, the moves, the fashion. Scott Pilgrim’s venture into the beat-em-up world has been widely praised as a classic. With its re-release this year, it received numerous upgrades such as improved gameplay and new characters not available in the initial releases for PS3 and Xbox One.
In this game, adorable versions of the movie’s characters are placed in settings reminiscent of the film’s plot, allowing you to immerse yourself in the comic’s aesthetic while largely adhering to the underappreciated movie’s narrative. The challenge level is punishingly high, maintaining the classic arcade-style interface and life system it inherited, and offering a multiplayer mode that will surely delight gamers. Veterans can appreciate the strategic combinations, but button-mashers won’t feel left out in this popular pixel-art game.

6 Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
Once we’ve finished the quartet, and with a portable-friendly brawler featuring the Blue Knight and his crew inspired by Smash, we believe it would be an engaging adventure to play on-the-go. Shovel Knight’s stages and swift gameplay resemble numerous successful platformers now thriving on mobile devices, and there’s an abundance of content in the Treasure Trove suitable for players with diverse preferences.
First released back in 2014, Shovel Knight offers a glimpse into an alternate reality where it was developed for the NES. Its retro 8-bit graphics and chiptune soundtrack create an authentic feel reminiscent of the classic era of gaming. With three expansions featuring bosses from the original game, each with unique move sets and narratives, you’ll find yourself lost in this shovel-themed world for countless hours.

7 Maquette
A captivating puzzle-platformer, Maquette narrates an emotionally intense tale about two people and their seemingly ideal relationship, which has now ended. As you progress through the narrative, you encounter items that resemble keepsakes or memories, and the environment around you mirrors these elements in a smaller scale, altering when you insert objects into a miniature representation of itself.
Does it leave you perplexed? This game is indeed a puzzle, and sometimes the most straightforward answers appear illogical, so you must stretch your mind to fit within this vibrant, whimsical world reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s realm. When a massive key drops from the sky, enabling you to traverse an impassable chasm beforehand, the enchantment of Maquette becomes clear, as does the narrative that may tug at your heartstrings and encourage reflection on past love memories and discussions.

8 A Short Hike
In this open-world adventure game, you’re offered ample freedom and tranquility through its user-friendly controls. You assume the role of Claire, a young bird on a mission to reach the mountain peak for an essential phone call. Along your journey, you encounter various island inhabitants who require assistance resolving their issues. Additionally, there are numerous hidden items scattered across the island that trigger side-quests and reveal additional stories.
Since Claire is a bird character, you have the opportunity to glide across the island and take advantage of wind currents for lift-off, making gameplay incredibly enjoyable and providing a distinct method of transportation. The entire game exudes a strong resemblance to Animal Crossing, and although it’s relatively brief, it serves as an engaging diversion with endearing characters and an abundance of charm.

9 Undertale
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but sing praises for Toby Fox’s heartwarming tribute to the Mother series. The narrative is captivating, the music is enchanting, and the combat system is nothing short of brilliant. It’s a pity that it hasn’t been officially released on mobile platforms yet, but I can’t help but feel it would thrive there. Its uncomplicated yet stylish visuals and user-friendly control mechanism promise an engaging RPG adventure for friends and me.

10 Celeste
What captivates players about Celeste is its meticulous pixel-art style reminiscent of 8/16-bit games, combined with engaging platform gaming. Despite being challenging, the game offers an adjustable difficulty level that caters to various playing styles, ensuring it’s accessible for everyone. Additionally, the heartfelt narrative adds depth and significance to the complex platforming challenges, making Celeste a game you won’t forget even after finishing it.
