As a seasoned moviegoer who has seen more planes take off and land than I care to count, I can say with confidence that the news of Top Gun 3 sent shockwaves through the cinematic community. The last thing I expected was another installment in this beloved franchise, but here we are!
The movie defied all predictions by reaching number one at the box office in 2022 and later dominating streaming platforms. Now, it’s been announced that a third installment of Top Gun is being developed, and there seems to be a significant push to ensure that this new film will either equal or surpass its predecessors. At the premiere of Gladiator II, Greg “Tarzan” Davis gave an update on the current state of the upcoming aerial sequel to Brandon Davis.
The actor explained how the news of Top Gun 3 being given the green light came as a shock to all the Maverick cast, as they had not been told that there was a third movie in consideration at Paramount. He said:
We’re eagerly anticipating its development in the perfect location. When the announcement of Top Gun 3 surfaced, it came as a surprise to everyone, and we all exchanged messages wondering if it was true. Once confirmed, I found myself on set with Tom [Cruise], and he expressed his desire to ensure the story is just right. The success of the previous film doesn’t guarantee another one; they simply want to tell a good story, engage an audience, and if we can achieve that, I believe there will be a Top Gun 3, but for now, we are putting in our best efforts to make it happen.
No One Expected a Top Gun 3 Announcement
Just like the other members of the cast, it was through an unexpected channel that Davis learned about the upcoming third installment of Top Gun. He added:
I received numerous calls from family members inquiring if I was currently flying and asking about the situation. It was through these calls that I learned the news, which caused quite a stir among our Top Gun group message as everyone was questioning its authenticity. We were unsure about what had transpired, so it was both thrilling and perplexing. Out of all of us, Glen [Powell] seemed the most bewildered.
According to Davis, if a story is compelling and brings fresh layers to the series, similar to how Top Gun: Maverick did, there’s no force that can prevent the creation of another film in the franchise. On the other hand, if it appears the production won’t meet lofty expectations, it likely won’t materialize.
At this point, it remains undecided whether Tom Cruise’s character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, will play a significant role in Top Gun 3, or if the storyline will focus more on other characters in the team for the upcoming installment. However, Val Kilmer’s comments about Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s commitment to making it “right” indicate that Tom Cruise will undoubtedly be a key figure in the film’s production, which is entirely fitting given his passion for high-octane roles.
