L.J. Smith, renowned author of the highly successful young adult series “The Vampire Diaries,” has passed away at the age of 66. Known for her captivating vampire novels, Smith’s work was adapted into a popular television show titled “The Vampire Diaries” on the CW Network, running for an impressive eight seasons. According to The New York Times, the author breathed her last on March 8, in Walnut Creek, California, having battled the complications of a rare autoimmune disease for ten years. On her official website, a touching tribute can be found honoring the “compassionate and gracious spirit” who made significant contributions to the genre of supernatural literature.
Lisa was a compassionate and soft-hearted individual, whose intelligence, ingenuity, strength, and compassion brightened the lives of her family, acquaintances, and followers. She will be cherished for her inventive mind, her groundbreaking contributions to supernatural literature, and her kindness, warmth, and affection, both in her written works and beyond them. Born Lisa Jane Smith on September 4, 1958, it’s said that her high school English teacher boosted her self-assurance to venture into writing. Smith initially worked as an elementary school educator, but she departed after three years to follow her dreams. She penned her debut book, “The Night of Solstice,” which was published in 1987.
In 1991, “The Awakening” (Volume 1) marked the debut of the “Vampire Diaries” book series. This novel presented key characters such as Elena, Stefan, Matt, Bonnie, Caroline, and Meredith. The story revolves around Elena’s romance with Stefan, while the group attempts to unravel the mystery behind the violent incidents in Fell’s Church. “The Struggle” and “The Fury,” the subsequent volumes, were also published that year. Due to its immense popularity, the series was adapted into a TV show by the CW. The first episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” featuring Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert (initially considered for another hit series), garnered the largest audience for any CW series premiere since the network’s inception in 2006.
LJ Smith’s Popular Novels Gave the CW One of Its Biggest Shows
The supernatural drama series “The Vampire Diaries” debuted on the CW Network on September 10, 2009, approximately twenty years after author LJ Smith’s first novel was published. This show is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, a place steeped in supernatural lore. Elena Gilbert (played by Dobrev), a teen orphan who tragically lost her parents in a car accident, finds herself falling in love with Stefon Salvatore (portrayed by Paul Wesley), a vampire 161 years old. Unbeknownst to Gilbert, Salvatore is actually a vampire, and the arrival of his brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), complicates their relationship, creating a romantic triangle.
In this show, they are both working to shield Elena from Katherine, an old flame who happens to be her look-alike. The town they live in is plagued by villains and mysteries from their past that eventually surface. Apart from Elena, the story also revolves around her brother Jeremy, aunt Jenna, and friends Bonnie and Caroline. Additionally, Steven R. McQueen, Sara Canning, Kat Graham, and Candice King play significant roles in the series. The success of Vampire Diaries led to the creation of two spin-offs, namely The Originals and Legacies.
