As a long-time fan of the Transformers franchise, I have witnessed the ups and downs of this intriguing saga through various animated series, comic books, and live-action films. With each new addition to the universe, my excitement builds, only to be met with moments of confusion due to the complex timeline.
At San Diego Comic-Con, the start was made by “Transformers One” with an impressive Hall H presentation. After receiving rave reviews following a preview screening two months prior to its release, there’s been significant excitement surrounding the upcoming animated Transformers movie. Due to the lukewarm reception to the initial trailer, Paramount Pictures unveiled a fresh trailer for “Transformers One.” During the panel, the filmmakers shared that despite being an animated production, it would still connect to the live-action series.
At Hall H, as reported by DiscussingFilm, it came to light that Transformers One is actually a prequel to the live-action Transformers movies. The film’s setting is reportedly three billion years in the past according to the filmmakers. Contrary to earlier speculation, Transformers One is not an independent animated film aiming for a new narrative and continuity.
The Complicated Transformers Timeline
Paraphrasing: Making “Transformers One” a prequel to the live-action movies poses numerous challenges regarding the chronology. The existing live-action “Transformers” films feature a complex timeline, with “Bumblebee” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” being described as both prequels and reboots of the five Michael Bay-directed films. The stories in “Bumblebee” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” conflict with elements from the five Michael Bay Transformers movies, notably concerning Bumblebee’s backstory and Unicron, leading to an even more complicated narrative situation.
Based on the trailers for Transformers: One, it seems that several story elements presented in the previews don’t align with the previous five Michael Bay Transformers films or the two most recent ones. The Transformers series now appears to have a more perplexing timeline than the X-Men movies produced by 20th Century Fox. Moreover, Chris Hemsworth’s role as Optimus Prime in Transformers One contrasts with his planned lead human character appearance in the upcoming Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover film. Perhaps, one of the characters might comment on the resemblance between Hemsworth’s human character and a young Optimus Prime.
As a long-time fan of the Transformers franchise, I’ve seen my fair share of continuity issues and retcons over the years. But let me tell you, some fans might be getting carried away with their theories about the latest animated film, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.” With a time difference of three billion years between the animated and live-action series, I believe the animators have enough creative freedom to explore new stories without worrying too much about continuity.
