Travel Guide Rick Steves Shares Prostate Cancer Diagnosis: “I Feel Good About My Positive Attitude”

As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating virtual worlds, I find a certain parallel between Rick Steves‘ journey and my own. Like him, I too have embarked on many adventures, albeit virtual ones, and faced challenges that tested my resilience and optimism.

Travel guru Rick Steves, known for his influential guidebooks, television series, and radio programs, revealed on Thursday that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

I’m thrilled to share that Steve posted an update on social media, indicating that the scans showed no signs of his cancer spreading. He expressed optimism with, “There’s a definitive route to recovery and regaining good health.”

As a seasoned actor who has traveled the world for work, I am always excited to embark on new projects. This month, I will be traveling to France to complete filming for two exciting new TV shows. The allure of Paris and its rich cultural history never fails to inspire me, and I am eager to immerse myself in the creative process once again.

“It appears that I’ll undergo surgery around late September, which means I’ll need about a month to recover. Fingers crossed, I should be cancer-free by the end of October. I have complete faith in my doctor and Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. I am also incredibly grateful for the support I receive from friends, family, and my strong religious beliefs that guide me.”

As for me, I’ve always managed to avoid any overnight stays at the hospital, but I’m treating my upcoming surgery as if it’s an epic journey – a truly significant adventure.

“He went on, expressing his satisfaction with his optimistic outlook. He also mentioned that he anticipates bringing back some valuable, non-tangible keepsakes such as: noticing the beauty in small details, valuing people’s kindness and cherishing relationships with friends and family, marveling at advanced medicine and the incredible team of brilliant, hardworking individuals who make it function, appreciating life, health, and this world we get to experience, and overall feeling more grateful.”

He ended his message with a note expressing his anticipation for numerous more years filled with enjoyable journeys, stimulating partnerships, and lovely camaraderie.

Steve is widely recognized as the creator of numerous travel guidebooks that delve into various European destinations. Since the year 2000, he has been the face of the television series “Rick Steves’ Europe” and additionally oversees the radio broadcast and podcast titled “Traveling with Rick Steves”.
