As a long-time fan who’s been following Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s careers since their Nine Inch Nails days, I can truly appreciate their transformation into acclaimed movie composers. Their journey from the pulsating rhythm of rock to the emotional symphony of film scores is nothing short of inspiring.
It’s not common that a rock band’s lead vocalist switches to becoming a renowned film composer, but Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have managed to do just that in the course of their careers. Initially recognized as part of Nine Inch Nails, since 2010 they’ve been composing music for numerous films, such as “The Social Network” and two highly anticipated films from 2024, namely “Challengers” and “Queer“. When asked about their recent work, Reznor openly shared his preference for creating film music.
Over more than a decade and a half, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have successfully juggled their commitments to Nine Inch Nails and film projects. When asked about his preference between the two industries, this is what Reznor had to say:
We’re seeking a shared creative journey with intriguing individuals through film, which we haven’t found as consistently within the music industry. For our personal preference, the music scene hasn’t been particularly appealing. You spoke of disenchantment with the music world? Yes, indeed. The ethos of the music industry leaves much to be desired. That’s a topic for another discussion, but the impact of technology on the music business – altering listening habits and undermining its value – is disheartening. I’m not just an old-timer complaining about the weather, but a music aficionado who witnessed music as the primary focus. Today, music often feels more like a backdrop or accompaniment to other activities. That’s a long, somewhat bitter tale.
When conversing with Reznor, IndieWire discussed his discontentment towards the current state of the music industry, which has evolved significantly in this era of internet and social media. At 59 years old, he reminisces about a period when the music industry primarily focused on the art itself, but now finds it no longer maintains that essence. Although he declined to elaborate further, his candid statement “the music world sucks” suggests his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.
Although Reznor might seem unconventional within the music scene, his partnership with Atticus Ross has certainly thrived in Hollywood. Their distinctive movie scores, like those for “The Social Network” (which won Best Original Score in 2011) and more recently “Soul” (earning them their second Oscar in 2021), are testament to this success.
Regarding their most recent productions, Luca Guadagnino’s films, particularly “Challengers,” are generating a lot of buzz during awards season and could potentially secure the team’s fourth nomination in the Best Original Score category. In discussions about its creation, Reznor stated this:
From the start, Challengers proposed an innovative idea: he wanted music to play a significant role in our film, making it impossible for viewers to ignore. He envisioned it as a driving force, creating an atmosphere where audiences might feel like they’re at a dance party, even in their seats. He described his vision as energetic and fun, with an edge of aggression. Let’s see how this idea unfolds.
Previously, when Reznor and Ross received Challengers, they had previously collaborated with the director on the 2022 film Bones And All. They mentioned that Guadagnino desired the movie’s daring music to play a significant role within the film, and he also instructed them to draw inspiration from club music originating from Berlin to align with his creative vision. Given our review of Challengers and the score’s rapidly increasing popularity as one of the top scores in 2024, it appears that their efforts were successful!
