As a long-time fan of Ben Stiller‘s work, I have always admired his audacity to push boundaries and tackle controversial topics through humor. However, watching Tropic Thunder again today, it feels like a relic from a bygone era – one that might not even make it past the greenlight process in today’s hyper-sensitive climate.
The movie “Tropic Thunder” is considered by many as Ben Stiller’s most contentious film, yet it could be one of his finest, depending on who you talk to. This edgy comedy targeted actors who go to great lengths to win awards, but received mixed opinions. Even when it premiered in 2008, its depiction of Blackface and insensitive language towards the disabled sparked controversy. However, Stiller, who has defended the film as a parody in the past, offers an open perspective on the chances of “Tropic Thunder” being produced today.
The actor/director recently had an in-depth conversation with Collider, primarily focusing on his critically acclaimed crime-drama, “Escape at Dannemora“. During this discussion, he also shared insights about past, current, and upcoming projects of his. When asked about the feasibility of an over-the-top action comedy in today’s context, he provided a candid response. He also acknowledged that the release of “Tropic Thunder” was largely due to a well-known director taking it up.
It seems challenging to pull off edgier comedy in the current climate, especially at the same scale we did, considering the financial aspects of our industry. Frankly, I believe we were lucky to even produce it, and I attribute that good fortune largely to Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks. He took a liking to the script and decided to bring it to life. In essence, it’s a production made for an intimate audience.
It’s hard to imagine a film like “Tropic Thunder” being produced today without significant changes to the script. Given its content and the decisions made within it, it doesn’t resonate enough with contemporary viewers to make a meaningful impact. I get the concept and can appreciate the humor, but in its current form, it’s outdated for modern audiences.
After some time, Ben Stiller offered his thoughts on Robert Downey Jr.’s character wearing blackface in a previous role, an issue the Iron Man star has addressed previously. He explained the intention behind the choice and how the context made it clear that it was not intended to be offensive:.
Indeed, the concept of Robert portraying a character intended to be an African American was quite questionable, even risky, both then and now. To be candid, in today’s climate, I’m not certain if I would have pursued such a role. I was aware that the humor lay in targeting actors seeking awards, but I’m unsure if I would take the same approach today.
In simpler terms, the director of “Reality Bites” appears to acknowledge that even a compelling storyline and perspective may not be enough for something carrying significant emotional weight. His candidness about this contentious aspect of his work is refreshing, and I appreciate his openness.
Moving beyond the 2008 movie and its modern reception, Ben Stiller still has a lot in store for viewers – such as an upcoming Adam Sandler sequel. His next film appearance is slated for our 2024 movie lineup with the movie “Nutcrackers,” which will be accessible with a Hulu subscription. Of course, we’re all eagerly waiting for Season 2 of “Severance,” featuring Stiller as well as his reunion with Adam Sandler in “Happy Gilmore 2.” Here’s hoping the 58-year-old continues to contribute to exciting projects in the future.
