True Blood's Joe Manganiello Says Cast was Really Overqualified

Summary

  • True Blood’s success was due to its overqualified cast, including theater kids, Tony and Oscar winners, and international stars.
  • Despite rumors of a reboot in 2021, HBO officially scrapped the idea in 2022 due to concerns about the script and direction.
  • While the True Blood reboot is currently off the table, the show still has a devoted fanbase and may be considered for revival in the future.

As a dedicated gamer and huge fan of True Blood, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible cast that brought this iconic series to life. Joe Manganiello, who played the charismatic werewolf Alcide Herveaux, once shared his thoughts on the overqualified actors gracing our screens with their talent.

HBO’s hit series True Blood, featuring Joe Manganiello as a star, is frequently discussed for potential comebacks by its devoted fanbase. In his opinion, a significant factor contributing to the show’s achievement was the exceptional caliber of the acting ensemble, which he thinks was far more skilled than required for the production.

Since its premiere in 2008, “True Blood” gained popularity for its unique blend of graphic violence and sensuality within the vampire genre, inspired by Charlaine Harris’ “Southern Vampire Mysteries” novel series. Over seven successful seasons, this captivating show amassed a large fan base and numerous award nominations. As Alexander Manganiello put it, considering the impressive ensemble of actors, such recognition is hardly unexpected.

As he told the Podcrushed podcast:

“True Blood was amusing because, you see, we were all exceptionally skilled. In fact, the scripts were surprisingly complex; they had a literary feel, reminiscent of Tennessee Williams. The drama could be quite intense at times, but since we were all actors, it felt like being backstage in an opera.”

As a fan, I’d describe it like this: My favorite cast ever? It’s got folks with Tonys and Oscars, not to mention Mike McMillan and me, the Carnegie Mellon crew. Then there were Rutina Wesley and Nelsan Ellis from Juilliard. Chris Bauer was the Yale graduate. We had international flair with Alexander Skarsgård from Sweden and Stephen Moyer hailing from England. And let’s not forget Anna Paquin, who came to us from New Zealand via Canada. This ensemble was absolutely brilliant – incredibly intelligent and well-trained actors.

Supporters of popular TV series like True Blood hate to see their favorite shows conclude, and this was true for True Blood as well. However, the program had begun to lose its luster near the end of its broadcast tenure, making it a fitting time for its termination around a decade ago. Recently, there have been signs of revival plans for the franchise, but unfortunately, these efforts have not progressed as anticipated.

In 2021, whispers of reviving “True Blood” emerged, but progress was slow due to the Covid pandemic. By 2022, there were reports of a pitch and script being developed, suggesting that both “True Blood” and “Six Feet Under,” former HBO successes, might return to our screens shortly.

Last February, HBO announced the cancellation of the revived version of “True Blood.” Based on media coverage then, several potential iterations of the show had been explored, but HBO decided against moving forward as none of them seemed satisfactory. Since the rebranding of HBO and MAX, there’s been no indication that “True Blood” will be revived once more. The series boasts a dedicated fanbase, and it is only a matter of time before discussions about a reboot resurface.
