‘True Detective’ Creator Nic Pizzolatto Has a “Story” for Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson to Reprise Cohle and Hart: They’re “Open to It”

The creator of “True Detective,” Nic Pizzolatto, has a concept for the series that aims to bring it back to its original origins.

In a recent interview on the “Nothing Left Unsaid” podcast, Pizzolatto shared that he has conceived a narrative idea which could bring back Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson‘s characters from the initial season of the crime drama, True Detective. Interestingly, these two actors were the main leads for the first season of True Detective, while each subsequent season featured a fresh cast.

He mentioned another possible tale for Cohle and Hart, which might become a reality someday,” he shared, noting that although he hasn’t written anything down yet, they’ve discussed reuniting to work on it. Furthermore, both McConaughey and Harrelson have shown interest in this project.

He hinted at another potential plot for Cohle and Hart, which could potentially happen in the future. While he hasn’t written anything down, they’ve talked about teaming up again and creating it. Additionally, both McConaughey and Harrelson have shown openness towards this project.

He mentioned that it’s an idea he’s been considering, not something he’s written down yet, but it’s been discussed between us. He believes the group might be receptive to it; however, the real question is if this idea will ever come to fruition.”

Or more casually:

“He said it’s an idea that’s just in his head, not something he’s written or committed to paper yet, but we’ve talked about it. He thinks the guys might be on board with it, but the real question is if this idea will ever happen.

Following a challenging second season and a third that regained viewer trust for the series, Pizzolatto’s contract with HBO ended, causing him to leave True Detective in order to work on another venture. Instead, Issa López was appointed as the writer for Night Country, which turned out to be the most-watched season of the franchise, boasting 12.7 million viewers per episode. This surpassed Pizzolatto’s initial season viewership of 11.9 million.

Previously disconnected from “True Detective”, Pizzolatto collaborated with McConaughey and Harrelson once more, this time playing their characters Rustin Cohle and Martin Hart respectively in a promotional piece titled “True to Texas”. In this advertisement, they called upon Texas’ legislature to establish incentives that would attract more film and TV productions to the state.
