Turns Out Steven Spielberg Is Responsible for Changing Twisters' Ending

As a die-hard movie buff and avid gamer with a soft spot for disaster films and romantic subplots, I was beyond excited to see “Twisters,” the new blockbuster about tornado chasers. The opening weekend box office numbers were impressive, but there’s one aspect of the film that left me (and many other viewers) feeling let down: the lack of a satisfying resolution to the budding romance between Kate and Tyler.

The new disaster film, “Twisters,” has drawn adoration from audiences with an impressive $81.25 million box office debut during its opening weekend. Nevertheless, there’s a small issue that leaves viewers feeling annoyed – a seemingly missing scene at the end of the movie. Actors Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones have attributed this to Steven Spielberg‘s involvement in the production, although they are quick to clarify that they do not place blame on him.

In simpler terms, “Twisters” is about two tornado chasers, Kate (Edgar-Jones) and Tyler (Powell), who have contrasting approaches during a historic storm season in Oklahoma. At first, they disagree; Kate works with her friend Javi’s modern research team, while Tyler joins a more reckless crew. However, as the story unfolds, Kate recognizes Tyler’s hidden depths, and they eventually form a strong bond. The climax features a classic movie scene where Tyler pursues Kate at the airport to prevent her from leaving for New York City.

The duo enjoy a sweet moment with deep affectionate gazes towards each other, but their tranquility is disrupted as they learn that bad weather has halted flights. They decide to leave and pursue the storms instead.

AND THEY DON’T KISS!

Why didn’t Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell kiss in Twisters?

Some moviegoers, captivated by Edgar-Jones and Powell’s on-screen connection, felt disappointed when they didn’t see a kiss between the two during the airport scene in the finished film. However, behind the scenes, director Lee Isaac Chung filmed a kiss for this moment, but it was ultimately removed from the movie.

Speaking to Collider, the stars said it was Spielberg’s call, and the director agreed.

As a gamer, I’d say, “I believe that was a clever touch from Spielberg, don’t you? It adds depth to the movie and prevents it from falling into clichés. For me, it feels like their journey doesn’t end here. They continue to be connected by their mutual passion for something greater.”

Powell agreed, adding “I too believe that this film isn’t primarily about these characters falling in love. Instead, it’s about Kate being drawn back to her true passion – storm chasing. By the end of the movie, they have this shared experience, and Kate’s enthusiasm is renewed, along with her sense of belonging. A kiss seems out of place as a conclusion for their journey.”

Despite some fans being disappointed by the absence of kissing scenes, Powell and Edgar- Jones appear to believe that Spielberg made the correct decision.

“Powell remarked, ‘That’s an excellent suggestion from Spielberg.’ It’s the reason that child is still in the mix. I find it incredible.”

Due to the immense popularity of Twisters, there’s a strong possibility that Kate and Tyler will share a romantic moment in a potential sequel. (Perhaps they might name it Lip Twists or something similar?)

Twisters is now in theaters.
