TV Ratings: NBC Opens 2024-25 Season in First Place

As a seasoned gamer and TV enthusiast who has weathered countless changes in the broadcasting landscape, I must say that the 2024-25 season premiere week has been quite the rollercoaster ride! NBC’s dominance with Sunday Night Football and their long-running series is nothing new, but it’s always a delight to witness the network’s unwavering grip on the top spot.

A thrilling “Sunday Night Football” match and impressive performances by multiple long-standing series contributed to NBC capturing the largest viewership during the opening week of the 2024-25 television season.

As a dedicated viewer, I’m thrilled to share that our network managed an impressive average of 6.2 million primetime viewers during the week of September 23rd to 29th, as per initial Nielsen ratings (which don’t factor in streaming or delayed viewing). It’s been six consecutive opening seasons and thirteen years running that we’ve reigned supreme among total viewers, and adults aged 18-49. This consistency is a testament to the quality content we deliver!

In the past seven days, ABC came in second place with approximately 5.4 million viewers, boosted by two major sports broadcasts – Monday Night Football and a primetime college football game on Saturday. CBS followed closely behind with 3.3 million viewers, while Fox had 1.8 million viewers.

Despite a caveat that CBS won’t unveil most of its programming lineup until mid-October, it’s worth noting that Sunday Night Football is expected to keep NBC at the top position. While the victory margins might be reduced due to this delay, it’s important to remember that CBS has reigned supreme for 16 consecutive seasons in terms of total viewers from September to May.

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but notice that even without the NFL, NBC managed to secure the top spot during premiere week. When you consider only entertainment programming, they averaged an impressive 4.2 million viewers, outranking CBS (2.9 million), ABC (2.8 million), and Fox (1.8 million). What’s more, NBC dominated with six of the ten most-watched non-sports shows! The season premieres of “The Voice” (5.96 million viewers) and “Chicago Fire” (5.6 million) took the first and second spots, while the season finale of “America’s Got Talent” (5.46 million) ranked third. Only CBS’ “60 Minutes” with 9.57 million viewers managed to outperform NBC, but it was a close call!
