TV Ratings: Oscars Draw 18M Viewers, Down From 2024

In contrast to last year, the 2025 Oscars attracted a lower overall viewership; however, it saw an increase in the number of younger viewers tuning in.

On Sunday, Conan O’Brien hosted the telecast that attracted approximately 18.07 million viewers on ABC and Hulu. As per Nielsen fast national ratings and internal data from Disney, this was the viewership figure. The event was significant because it marked the first time the Academy Awards were live-streamed. Unfortunately, Hulu encountered some technical issues during the night, with a few users experiencing interruptions towards the end of the awards ceremony, including missing the final two awards.

The number of viewers for this year’s Sunday show dropped approximately 7% compared to last year’s record-breaking event that drew in 19.49 million viewers on ABC without live streaming. The final figures, due out Tuesday, might narrow the gap between this year’s viewership and the projected total for 2024.

As a devoted Oscars fan, I was thrilled to see that this year’s event managed to surge in viewership among young adults, specifically those aged 18-49 and 18-34. It reached an all-time high post-pandemic for the latter group! The show garnered a rating of 3.92 among the 18-49 demographic, which is roughly equivalent to around 5.25 million viewers – a significant improvement from last year’s 3.82. To top it off, this year’s Oscars ranked as the second best since 2020, with the 2023 ceremony holding the title for the highest rating at 4.03.

For viewers aged 18-34, the Oscars’ 2022 rating of 3.17 (which translates to approximately 2.27 million viewers within this demographic) marked the highest audience figure for the event since the year 2020.

Typically, the Oscars remains the most popular awards ceremony of the year so far, surpassing the 15.4 million viewers who watched the Grammys a month ago. Furthermore, it outperformed the Grammys’ 3.91 rating among adults aged 18 to 49. This broadcast also claims the title for the largest primetime entertainment show on television in 2024-25, once again overtaking the viewership of the Grammys.

This story will be updated as final ratings figures become available.
