TV Ratings: Trump’s Address to Congress Draws 36.6M Viewers

During his initial speech to Congress, President Donald Trump attracted a larger audience than three of the speeches delivered by his predecessor, Joe Biden. However, it was still smaller than any audience for a speech during Trump’s own first term in office.

Based on Nielsen’s data, a total of 36.63 million people tuned in to watch the 100-minute speech over 15 different networks, which represents approximately 14% more viewers than President Biden had during his last State of the Union address (32.23 million viewers) on 14 cable and broadcast channels from the previous year.

Despite falling short of any addresses delivered by Trump during his initial term, his four speeches to joint sessions of Congress saw an average viewership of approximately 44.3 million people. The lowest viewership was recorded in 2020 with 37.17 million viewers. (It’s important to note that the first speech to Congress given during a new president’s term is not officially categorized as a State of the Union address.)
