‘Twisters’ Director on His Choice Between Kiss and No-Kiss Ending for Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell: “I Like It Better”

As a dedicated gamer and film enthusiast with a soft spot for romantic tales, I was truly invested in the story of “Twisters” and its characters, Tyler and Kate. The chemistry between Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones was undeniably palpable, and their bond over their shared fear of disastrous weather had me hooked from the very beginning. So, when I heard about the controversial ending where they don’t share a passionate kiss in the final scene, I was left feeling somewhat disappointed and confused.

As a huge fan of “Twisters,” I can tell you from Lee Isaac Chung’s own words why he chose not to have Tyler and Kate share a romantic kiss in the ending, despite some viewers’ hopes. The reason behind his decision remains a fascinating insight into the director’s creative vision for the film.

The disaster movie that showcases natural calamities opened domestically with approximately $80.5 million at the North American box office, ranking it as the third largest debut of the year, surpassed only by “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two”.

In the tornado story, fans have praised the strong connection between actors Powell and Edgar-Jones. Their characters form a deep bond through their shared fascination and apprehension of extreme weather in rural Oklahoma. However, in the last scene, as Kate (Edgar-Jones) prepares to leave at the airport, Powell and he make an unexpected decision to walk away together.

“I believe that audiences’ preferences regarding a kiss or not having one have shifted,” he explained to Entertainment Weekly. “I even attempted including the kiss, but the response was highly divided – it wasn’t due to the actors’ performance of the kiss.”

As a gamer, I’d say: “I filmed an alternative ending that day, and you know what? I prefer this one. It feels more conclusive to me. Sure, some viewers might have wanted a kiss scene, but maybe it’s better for us to leave that to their imagination. This way, we can end the story on a high note, with Kate continuing her journey with a smile. If we ended with a kiss, it might give the impression that her entire journey was just about that. But instead, I believe it’s more satisfying to see her achieve her goals and move forward.”

Edgar-Jones found the no-kiss finale “pleasantly surprising”. According to the British actress, both characters in the scene were equally passionate about their love, intelligence, and understanding of each other’s feelings. However, Powell seemed less enthusiastic about the decision: “I’m a bit miffed they didn’t go for it,” he quipped, possibly implying that his acting skills could have made the kiss more impactful.
