As a seasoned gamer of reality TV shows spanning across decades, I must admit that The Golden Bachelorette has managed to capture my heart (and screen time) this week. Being a Gen X-er myself, I find a peculiar sense of nostalgia watching these 60-something men navigate the mansion reminiscent of my own father and his buddies on a fishing trip.
Note from the Editor: This article contains no spoilers about Joan Vassos’ season. If you’re curious about potential spoilers for The Golden Bachelorette Season 1, you can find them here.
The dad energy was strong in Bachelor Mansion this week, as The Golden Bachelorette made its debut on the 2024 TV schedule. Twenty-four men ranging in age from 57 to 69 showed up to woo Joan Vassos, sharing stories about their kids, grandkids and hopes for the future. In true dad form, a couple of the guys gave the mansion a once-over, and their hilarious appraisal of their living quarters’ different amenities has gone viral. Bachelor Nation can’t get enough of Jack Lencioni and Charles Ling, and I hope they avoid being eliminated by Joan long enough for more of these odd-couple moments.
In the debut season of “The Golden Bachelorette”, it was unusual to witness a troop of men in their 60s taking over Bachelor Mansion, all vying for the affection of 61-year-old widow Joan Vassos. Frankly, I found the whole situation rather surprising, as contestants like Midwestern caterer Jack Lencioni and Charles Ling, a retired financial analyst from Pennsylvania, were casually inspecting the house, peeking into corners and such. Here’s a popular clip from the premiere that’s been trending on TikTok:

Jack Lencioni was thrilled with the mansion’s gorgeous pool — which I totally get — and his whole, “You do go in the pool, right?” was giving strong vibes of the I Thing You Should Leave spoof where dating show contestant Ronnie (Tim Robinson) is “just there for the zip line.” (The Golden producers doubled down on that in the preview of what’s to come, when another contestant straight-up said Jack was just there for the cannonballs.)
The caterer referred to a section of their makeshift dwelling as a “bohemian hangout,” and believed they discovered a vineyard. Additionally, I appreciate how he approximated around 72 ornamental candles adorning the walls.
At one point, Jack Lencioni started cooking dinner for Joan Vassos, but Charles Ling unexpectedly wanted to claim the kitchen for himself. He appeared startled that it worked perfectly, igniting the gas stove and tapping on the countertop as if checking its durability. Charles was delighted to find a well-stocked refrigerator filled with various types of meat.
I found it utterly charming, and it appeared that fellow fans resonated with this endearing display, as evidenced by the comments left on the TikTok video:
- this is soooooo dad – Sydney laforge
- not him patting the counters like “quality👌” 😆 they are so cute – Jenna
- Omg they’re so sweet! 🥰 Just a couple dads doin dad things 🤣 – now4dogs
- It’s like when your dad sees your new apartment for the first time and has to check everything to make sure it’s all sturdy lol – sefharas
- Have they checked the thermostat yet? 😂 – NerdyMedic3712
Indeed, numerous viewers found this particular scene so compelling that it motivated them to watch Joan Vasco’s entire season. Moreover, many advocated for a separate series centered around Charles L. and Jack, expressing their fervent wishes in their comments.
- I’m going to need a spin off show of these two tomorrow thx – KellyCaseyCo
- neeeed a home tour series from them 😭 – Zillow
- Imma need HGTV to get in on that! – Your Girl Jay
- Yeah I need a spinoff of these two bc 😭😭🤣🤣 – angeladenn
It’s true, I think it would have been fascinating to get a complete home tour from them, as I’m quite curious about their thoughts on the bunk beds considering their sleep arrangements seemed rather challenging.
Despite some people’s hesitation due to the past drama surrounding Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist’s divorce, Wednesday’s premiere of The Golden Bachelorette demonstrated that the show transcends any one relationship. Here’s hoping we’ll continue to enjoy heartwarming, funny scenes from our band of fathers in future episodes.
At 8 PM Eastern Time every Wednesday, you’ll find new episodes on ABC. If you missed it, don’t worry! You can catch up with a Hulu subscription by streaming it the following day.
