Tyler Hoechlin Praises Superman & Lois Ending and Passes the Torch to the Next Actor

Fans of DC Comics can look forward to a fresh Superman film in 2025, featuring David Corenswet as the titular character. This marks another actor stepping into the iconic role following Tyler Hoechlin, who recently concluded his portrayal of Clark Kent on The CW’s Superman & Lois series. Although the show was cut short, perhaps due to the upcoming Superman movie, I find it commendable that Hoechlin graciously passes the mantle.

In 2016, Tyler Hoechlin made his Superman debut during the second season of ‘Supergirl’. He went on to play this iconic role across several other shows including ‘The Flash’, ‘Arrow’, ‘Batwoman’ and ‘Legends of Tomorrow’. Eventually, he starred in a series of his own titled ‘Superman & Lois‘, alongside Bitsie Tulloch. This series premiered in 2021, with the emotional final episode airing in December of the same year. Recently, Hoechlin spoke on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You, addressing the question of whether he was disappointed that the show only lasted for four seasons. However, Hoechlin harbors no ill feelings regarding this matter.

The outcome was exactly what was expected. There were a multitude of factors that led to the cancellation, and I could probably go into detail about each one. However, I always felt like this role chose me for a specific reason, so I was content to do whatever it took until my services were no longer needed. Whether it lasted four years or ten, I’m ready to fulfill any duties asked of me.

It’s clear that playing Superman isn’t a trivial task, and it seems Tyler Hoechlin was simply grateful for the chance to embody the character as long as he did. Moreover, the finale of “Superman & Lois” delivered fitting conclusions for each character, including Clark. Often, cancellations occur before shows can offer closure, so it’s wonderful that S&L managed to tie up loose ends. Although Hoechlin isn’t disheartened about the series ending, there is a part of the journey he does yearn for: the experience itself.

Was I regretting not continuing to work with those individuals, as I genuinely cared for everyone in that team and cast, absolutely. However, I’m not longing to reprise the role of Superman again. This isn’t due to disliking the experience, but rather because I never harbored any expectations about it in the first place.

It seems understandable that Tyler Hoechlin might feel a little wistful about no longer collaborating with his “Superman & Lois” co-stars on a regular basis, given their comments. Over the course of four seasons, which included a global pandemic, a corporate merger, and other challenges, it’s likely that they grew quite close.

Few individuals can boast about playing Superman, but the former Teen Wolf star appears to be appreciative of this opportunity, regardless of its duration. Moreover, he expressed his feelings about passing the role onto the next actor, which I find truly heartwarming.

I found joy in maintaining my position, knowing that it was temporary until it was my turn to transition and let someone else take over. What saddened me was the thought of no longer working with those colleagues, but not the idea of relinquishing the role I played.

Both Hoechlin and Tulloch have expressed their enthusiasm for the latest Superman movie. Previously, Hoechlin voiced his anticipation upon seeing David Corenswet embody the Man of Steel. Meanwhile, Tulloch acknowledged Rachel Brosnahan, the new Lois in her farewell post on Superman & Lois during filming for the final season. It’s heartening to see actors showing support towards one another.

It’s disappointing that “Superman & Lois” has ended, considering the excellent caliber of the series and the apparent camaraderie among its cast and crew. However, it’s uplifting to learn that Hoechlin is eager to pass on the mantle and continues to express gratitude for his time in the role. Fans can now enjoy all four seasons of S&L with a Max subscription, while Superman will grace the big screen again on July 11.
