A display of fresh creations by Tyler Mitchell will debut at Gagosian New York within the next month. Titled “Ghost Images“, this exhibition sees Mitchell revisiting his Southern roots, seamlessly blending images of tranquil coastal recreation with profound contemplations on the psychological and historical significance of the settings portrayed.
Photos captured along Georgia’s coastal islands showcase stunning natural scenery, evoking peace and tranquility at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, one sees evidence of humanity’s past – a blend of beauty and history. Works such as “Gulfs Between,” “Voyage,” and “Voyage II” feature toy boats that symbolize the innocence of childhood, yet also represent ships transporting enslaved people to Jekyll Island. The burnt remains of the Carnegie family mansion dominate in “Dollhouse.” In this way, Mitchell poses the question: can photos encapsulate the intangible and serve as a means for self-discovery amidst historical backdrops?
Titled “Ghost Images“, this collection subtly captures “presences that linger yet remain unseen.” Mitchell’s art often conceals his subjects, delving into themes of layering and transience by employing an experimental style in form and layout. Drawing inspiration from photographers who are similarly fascinated by the “immaterial dimensions of space, spirit, and human shape,” the artist creates a tangible presence while summoning whispers of history past. This work hints that memory persists not as a spectral shadow but as a light refracted through time.
The exhibition will be on view at the gallery from February 27 through April 5, 2025.
