Tyler Perry Dismisses Critics of His Films: “Who Are You to Be Able to Say Which Black Story Is Important?”

As a huge fan of Tyler Perry, I can’t help but admire his unwavering dedication and resilience in the face of criticism. His recent statements during an interview on the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast resonated deeply with me.

Tyler Perry responded to elite critics who disparaged his movies this week, explaining that they are intended to uplift and resonate with his audience.

Perry expressed her frustration during an interview on the “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer” podcast, stating, “Many of my supporters face barriers preventing them from accessing therapy or joining me in a Volvo on weekends.” She continued, “There are those who seem to look down on us with airs and affectations. Yet, there’s another group, including myself and those from my background, who have worked hard and truly understand the struggles. Our stories are just as valid and should not be dismissed. Who are you to determine which Black narrative holds significance or deserves to be shared? Such a notion is unwelcome.”

Paraphrasing: Perry has developed the knack of disregarding criticisms over time. He asserted, “If you let others steer you away from a place that God intends for you, you’ll end up in trouble.” He firmly believes that his actions align with his purpose because for every critic, there are countless messages from people expressing gratitude and recognition, saying, “This impacted my life. I feel seen. You understood something crucial about me and my family.” These heartfelt expressions hold significance for him.

Elsewhere in the interview, Perry spoke about what got him involved with film originally.

As a devoted son, my sole determination was to ensure my mother’s wellbeing. With her being ill and working among children, who are notorious carriers of germs, she was frequently falling sick. Adding to her struggles, she had diabetes. Consequently, I became single-mindedly focused on earning enough to retire her from work, safeguarding her health and providing her the peace and comfort she deserved.

He continued, “That’s where the grind started… It was all about, ‘Can I take care of her?’”

In 2009, the media tycoon’s mother passed away after being unwell. However, Perry expressed that her living out her days with his achievements surpassed her expectations.

He added: “That’s all I need to be grateful for.”
