As a long-time observer of Tyler Perry’s prolific career, I’ve watched with a mix of admiration and concern as he’s churned out movie after movie and TV show after TV show since 2019. Having witnessed the critical lashings his work has endured, it’s clear that Perry’s relentless pace is taking a toll on both the quality of his projects and his own artistic growth.

One of the most productive content makers in Hollywood currently, Tyler Perry continues to keep himself occupied. In just the last five years, Perry has penned and helmed seven movies for the big screen, developed eight TV series, and maintains an impressive six projects scheduled for release in 2024 and beyond. Perry’s latest offering is Tyler Perry’s Divorce in Black, a suspenseful drama slated to debut on Prime Video on July 11, 2024.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel disappointed whenever I come across a poorly received production, like Tyler Perry’s “Divorce in the Black.” With a dismal 0% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a mediocre 4.4 score on IMDB, it’s hard not to question whether Perry should reconsider his approach to creating content. But as someone who’s always been drawn to the allure of financial success, I can see why he might continue pushing out projects, regardless of their critical reception.

As a big fan of Tyler Perry’s work, I’ve been excited to see the various Madea movies he’s released over the years, but I have to admit that the critical reception has been quite varied. According to Rotten Tomatoes, out of the nine Madea films they’ve evaluated, the ratings range from a disappointing 5% for “A Madea Halloween” to a more respectable 61% for “Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself.” Most of them, however, fall in the lower percentage brackets.

Perry wrote and directed the movie “Divorce in the Black.” The story follows the married couple Ava, portrayed by Meagan Good, and Dallas, played by Cory Hardrict. When Dallas decides to leave Ava, she feels devastated. However, her sadness turns into hope when she encounters an attractive new bachelor. Unaware of this development, Dallas regrets his decision and grows envious. His jealousy escalates to the point where he puts both Ava and her new partner’s lives in danger with his vindictive behavior.

The movie was criticized as predictable and unoriginal within its genre, drawing accusations that it was just another Tyler Perry production without any fresh ideas or growth in filmmaking skills since his debut two decades ago. Surprisingly, this unremarkable film still attracted a large audience, with streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video continuing to finance and produce Perry’s work.

if “Divorce in the Black” were an exceptional case in Perry’s career, it wouldn’t be so concerning. However, over the past five years, despite facing harsh criticism from critics, Perry has remained active and productive. It might be time for him to pause, reassess, and invest more energy into creating superior, acclaimed works instead.

With a new movie almost annually, concerns about rushed and subpar productions have arisen. Following this trend, most of Perry’s films since 2019 received negative reviews, leaving many wondering if he would shift his focus away from filmmaking altogether.

In addition to his work in films, Perry has been keeping busy by penning scripts for various TV series he’s created since 2019. Notable recent TV projects and their IMDb scores are “Assisted Living” (3.5), “Bruh” (4.1), “Young Dylan” (2.7), “Zatima” (6.9), “All The Queen’s Men” (6.7), “Ruthless,” and “The Oval” (4.8), as well as “Sistas” (5.6). More recently, in 2021, he showcased his talents in two additional roles – one in Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up,” where he displayed comedic prowess alongside an all-star cast, and another in Taylor Sheridan’s “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” where he delivered a gripping performance in an action-thriller setting.

As someone who has closely followed Tyler Perry’s career for years, I strongly believe that it’s time for him to slow down and be more selective about the projects he takes on. I’ve been consistently impressed by his acting abilities in films that aren’t his own creations, but unfortunately, his directorial efforts have left much to be desired.
