Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black is Streaming on Netflix, but Rotten Tomatoes Critics Hate It

As someone who has been a long-time fan of Tyler Perry’s work, I must admit that my feelings about his latest Netflix offering, “Beauty in Black,” are rather conflicted. On one hand, I have always appreciated Perry’s unique storytelling style and his ability to create relatable characters that resonate with a wide audience. However, this series seems to be another instance of Perry pushing the boundaries of good taste for the sake of shock value rather than emotional depth.

The latest collaboration between the writer, director, and actor, once again proves to be a popular choice on Netflix. Yet, this new series has also maintained a pattern of mixed critical reception and divisive audience opinions towards Perry’s exclusive content on the streaming platform. Previously, Netflix has faced criticism for their long-term agreement with Perry, as fans of many well-received shows that were canceled in favor of what is perceived as subpar content created by the writer.

Since inking a substantial agreement with Netflix in the year 2023, Perry has experienced a series of ups and downs. The deal involved him producing eight films within a span of four years, and admittedly, he expressed uncertainty about his plans during an interview, stating that he had “no idea” what was next. Despite the mixed reception to some of his films, such as the 2024 release Mea Culpa, Perry’s television series have been drawing large audiences. However, they haven’t necessarily won over critics and viewers alike.

The title Beauty in Black refers to a story where a stripper’s life changes dramatically when she interacts with a rich, troubled family running a cosmetics empire and is involved in an underhanded trafficking operation. Critics generally ignore Perry’s Netflix shows, and this trend continues with his latest series. Unfortunately, the few reviews available on Rotten Tomatoes are not particularly positive.

Is Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black Worth Watching on Netflix?

Based on two critical reviews, it seems the show doesn’t receive a positive response. One critique from LeisureByte.com points out that Perry’s production prioritizes excessive swearing and nudity over creating an emotional narrative for its characters. Meanwhile, another review from Ready Steady Cut suggests that after finding success with his Madea franchise, Perry appears to have shut himself off from anyone who might advise him that a project like “Beauty in Black” is poorly conceived.

Undeniably, Perry’s latest series has climbed to the top of Netflix’s TV rankings, marking another triumphant addition to their content library. In this regard, critic reviews hold minimal significance. However, it appears that viewers are quite divided about Beauty in Black; some consider it a groundbreaking masterpiece, while others view it as the most disastrous screen content ever produced.

As a devoted admirer, I feel compelled to express my disappointment in the latest Tyler Perry production. It seemed as though the creative well had run dry on this one. The film appeared to perpetuate a troubling pattern of women being degraded by men, which was taken to an extreme level in this instance. I sincerely hope that Mr. Perry can find fresh, innovative ideas for his future projects.

This adaptation of the series is so lackluster that it’s nearly painful to watch. The actors appear devoid of talent, delivering performances that are remarkably amateurish, and the storylines are painfully predictable. It has been quite some time since I encountered a program as disappointing as this one.

While many praises abound for the series, some accolades seem a bit dubious – such as one proclaiming it as another brilliant sitcom by Perry! However, Jayan L’s review, which appreciates Perry’s unique style of exaggerated drama, demonstrates that there is indeed genuine affection for his work. This is how Jayan L puts it:

I truly loved the series; I managed to watch all eight episodes in a single day. It was captivating, full of suspense, and I found myself craving more of its dramatic twists. Kudos to Tyler for such an impressive work! I can’t wait for the next installment!

Despite everything, only half of the “Beauty in Black” series has been aired so far, with eight episodes out and another eight yet to come. Fans who have enjoyed the show undoubtedly look forward to more. For those less interested, there’s always something else to watch.
