As a long-time admirer of Gregg Wallace and his culinary prowess, it is disheartening to witness this unfolding situation. However, as a staunch advocate for justice and fairness, I believe that every individual should be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their professional standing.
The well-known BBC show host, Gregg Wallace, who is a key figure on MasterChef, has been requested to temporarily vacate his position as accusations of past misbehavior are looked into thoroughly.
Banijay U.K. has confirmed that its 60-year-old employee, Wallace, is collaborating with the internal investigation. This follows reports by BBC News that allegations of inappropriate sexual comments made towards colleagues over a span of 17 years, as claimed by 13 individuals, have surfaced.
Among them is broadcaster Kirsty Wark, who participated in the U.K.’s Celebrity MasterChef in 2011. She stated that on two separate instances, the host cracked inappropriate jokes with a sexual connotation in the presence of the cast and crew.
Wallace’s legal team has stated categorically that the allegations about his behavior are completely untrue. His representative did not provide an immediate response when approached by The Hollywood Reporter for comment.
The TV personality is widely recognized in Britain, often collaborating with co-host John Torode on MasterChef, Celebrity MasterChef, and MasterChef: The Professionals, which aired on BBC One and BBC Two. He frequently contributes articles to Good Food, Now, and Olive magazines.
Among other accusations highlighted by the BBC regarding Wallace, there were claims that he freely discussed his intimate matters, removed his shirt in the presence of a female employee with the intention of presenting a fashion show, and informed a junior female coworker that he was not wearing any undergarments.
Banijay U.K. stated: “Although these complainants haven’t brought their accusations to our show producers or Banijay U.K. directly, we believe it’s important to launch an immediate, unbiased investigation by an outside party. During this examination, Gregg Wallace will temporarily step back from his position on ‘MasterChef’, and he has pledged to fully cooperate throughout the entire process.
The company emphasized that ensuring the well-being of Banijay U.K.’s staff is always a top priority, and they clearly communicate their behavioral expectations to both cast and crew on all productions. They make it easy for concerns to be raised, even anonymously, and these methods are prominently displayed on set. Although the accusations are from the past, the company takes seriously any instances where their expectations are not upheld, thoroughly investigating such matters and addressing them appropriately when they arise.
The BBC has been receiving an increasing amount of unfavorable focus recently, following allegations of improper behavior on the show “Strictly Come Dancing” and the conviction of ex-broadcaster Huw Edwards for possessing inappropriate child images.
When concerns are brought to our attention, we handle them carefully and have strong systems in place for resolution. We make it clear that actions not meeting the BBC’s standards will never be accepted. If an individual is employed by an external production company, we pass on any complaints or worries to them and will always assist them in addressing these issues.
