U.K. Virtual Production Studio Dimension Unveils Set of AI Tools to “Empower Creatives”

Dimension Studio, recognized for its work on productions such as Sony Pictures’ Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” Apple TV+ miniseries “Masters of the Air,” and Peacock series “Those About to Die” (Peacock), has revealed a cutting-edge AI-driven content production pipeline. This pipeline, developed in-house, is designed to assist filmmakers and content creators in delivering content quicker and more efficiently than previously possible.

Last year, Dimension, a company that received significant investment from private equity firm Growth Catalyst Partners (GCP), announced that they will roll out a new artificial intelligence service throughout their operations. This move is intended to enhance the abilities of their teams, allowing them to produce exceptional creative outcomes for their clients on a global scale, with particular focus on expanding production capabilities in key markets like the U.K., U.S., and Europe.

To demonstrate the capabilities of our AI system, Dimension’s Futures team has created an animated children’s short titled “Mara & Milo: Magic & Mayhem“. This production was a collaboration between two artists who relied on an AI pipeline for assistance. The pipeline enabled them to expedite creative development and look design, allowing them to complete the project in weeks rather than months. It also facilitated rapid prototyping of various ideas in areas such as character design, costumes, environments, lighting, animation, camera movements, and shot selection.

According to Dimension, the Mara & Milo team believe that the new offering significantly cut down their production time by about a third, compared to conventional methods.

The pipeline places Dimension as a perfect collaborator for productions aiming to innovatively utilize AI and those seeking efficiency without sacrificing quality,” the company stated. “This partnership can be beneficial for various projects such as animated series, short-form content, or advertising, especially where quick turnaround times are essential.

Speaking about the use of AI for content creation, Junaid Baig, Dimension’s chief innovation officer, highlighted that achieving uniformity and continuity from scene to scene has been a significant hurdle. However, what sets our team apart is their ability to streamline the utilization of these tools to ensure consistent outcomes in terms of character and environment depiction, as well as preserving control over assets such as camera movement or handling multiple characters simultaneously.

Dimension underscores that their AI strategy prioritizes a human-focused approach, with the pipeline being designed to empower artists and facilitate their unique creative expression. The company also noted that instead of replacing roles, this method enhances productivity. Moreover, the pipeline can adapt to any stage of production, whether it’s storyboarding, design, animation, or virtual camera operation and cinematography.

Simon Windsor, co-CEO of Dimension, emphasized: “Artificial Intelligence is a groundbreaking technology that’s reshaping filmmaking and storytelling at an unprecedented pace and scope. Innovative production methods are rapidly emerging, offering the potential to empower creators and artists more than ever before.

Dimension has unveiled its ethical and responsible AI policy. Furthermore, they emphasize that when employing any artificial intelligence processes, be it during the development of workflows or in their business operations, Dimension is deeply dedicated to prioritizing creative roles as the crucial element in any post-production or animation projects.

Dimension has studios in the U.K. and U.S. and highlights its “ability to operate globally.”
