‘Umbrella Academy’ Star Reflects On Lila & Five's Controversial Storyline In Final Season

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that the final season of The Umbrella Academy was a rollercoaster ride, to say the least. The romance between Five and Lila was undoubtedly one of the most divisive elements, sparking heated debates among fans. While I respect Ritu Arya’s enthusiasm for their dynamic, as someone who prefers my romances less incestuous and more grounded in character development, I found myself on the side of those who were less than enthused by this pairing.

The last installment of “The Umbrella Academy” generated a lot of debate among fans due to several factors, however, one aspect that stirred significant conflict was the romantic relationship between Five, portrayed by Aiden Gallagher, and Lila, played by Ritu Arya. Most viewers disapproved of this coupling for various reasons, including the fact that at that point in the storyline, Lila was married to Diego (David Castaneda), Five’s brother. Nevertheless, Arya has since expressed her perspective on the controversial relationship, expressing a more positive outlook on it.

In an interview with Collider regarding her latest project, “Paris Has Fallen”, Arya expressed her views on fans’ lukewarm response towards the romance between characters Five and Lila. Interestingly, she appeared to be a proponent of their interactions, expressing her fondness by saying, “I adored my storyline. I thought it was incredibly innovative and intelligent. I appreciate art that challenges norms and initiates discussions.” However, despite her excitement, she also mentioned the challenge posed by the shorter length of the final season, which hindered the exploration of certain story elements – such as her character’s relationship with Five – to an extent she would have preferred.

I’m really proud of all the work that we did. I just wish that we had 10 episodes instead of six.

It’s not surprising that the quick six-episode run for season four of The Umbrella Academy left both the actors and viewers feeling rushed. Unfortunately, this shorter runtime seems to have been a significant mistake, as indicated by the show’s less than favorable reviews and ratings. The abrupt ending left many fans unsatisfied due to plot inconsistencies and unanswered questions. Moreover, several well-known characters acted in ways that were contrary to their earlier portrayals, including Lila and Five. Had there been an extra four episodes, many of these problems might have been addressed, such as providing a more positive portrayal of Lila and Five’s relationship.

Diverting From the Source Material Led to ‘The Umbrella Academy‘s Downfall

In contrast, increasing the number of episodes for the final season of The Umbrella Academy from six to ten might not have significantly impacted viewers’ opinions towards Lila and Five’s romantic involvement or their overall experience of the show. This is because the complex backstories of these characters made a romantic relationship seem implausible, and the substantial age difference was merely an additional obstacle.

It’s hard to ignore that the fourth season of The Umbrella Academy, which deviated significantly from its original comic source, received the lowest ratings among all seasons. While the first three seasons were generally faithful adaptations, making only minor adjustments without affecting the main storyline, the final season took a different turn by creating an entirely new narrative. It remains a mystery why this change was made, but the outcome is clear – many viewers found issues with elements such as Five and Lila’s relationship, among other decisions in the last few episodes of The Umbrella Academy.
