It’s safe to say that fans of The Umbrella Academy were sad to see their beloved hit Netflix series take its bow last year after four (or maybe three) acclaimed seasons. The superhero show — which was often laugh-out-loud funny, by the way — featured quite the talented ensemble including Tom Hopper (Space Cadet) and Academy Award-nominee Elliot Page (Juno). Speaking of, Page’s fan-favorite character Vanya had a standout character arc in the midst of Season 2, where she was transported back to the 1960s and ultimately met the acquaintance of Sissy (Marin Ireland). From there, a lasting relationship formed, perhaps leading followers of the series to wonder: What if the two were to ever meet again, by some time-traveling happenstance?
Recently, MovieWeb interviewed Ireland, who’s been quite active in Hollywood post the wrap-up of “The Umbrella Academy”. Among other projects, she’s starring in a fresh series on Apple TV+ titled “Dope Thief“. During this promotion spree, Ireland also spoke about her delightful character Sissy.
“It’s too bad The Umbrella Academy is done, because Elliot Page and I always had a fan fantasy. Because of the time jumps on that show, we always wished that the characters could have reunited in another timeline,” Ireland told us. “That was always the fantasy: We got that final moment together… Maybe in another season, we can jump around in time, and they can find each other and be happy. There’s still time. There’s always time.”
“Vocal Challenges” in ‘Dope Thief’
While fans of The Umbrella Academy must wait in vain for any sort of additional content from Netflix, at least they can enjoy seeing Ireland steal her scenes on another streaming platform. Sure, Oscar-nominee Brian Tyree Henry serves as leading man in Dope Thief, but the series is rich with juicy supporting turns, such as Ireland’s character of Mina. Henry and Ireland’s troubled and layered personas come face to face early on in the show, in a deadly standoff for the books that will leave you itching for the next episode.
Certain violent sequences leave Mina physically damaged — including the virtual destruction of her vocal cords — and Ireland opened up to us about how she made those particular scenes feel so authentically painful.
“I did work with a speech therapist to try to find a way to work on my vocal challenges that wouldn’t actually damage my voice. That was wild, to be sort of robbed of some normal things that we have as actors, like volume and pitch, to express myself. Also, in [my scenes with co-star Amir Arison], he’s talking to me and I’m responding with writing my lines back to him in some form or other. And it was very, very bizarre and tough for me to, like, run my lines that way because I realized early on: I actually had to write them so I could find out how to time out each one… things like that. It was pretty weird.”
