Unbelievable Impressions: Dexter’s Original Cast Lives On in Original Sin!

It’s amazing to ponder this fact, but the Dexter series has been a part of our entertainment landscape for almost two decades now, first appearing on screens in 2006 with its initial release. Although the final episode sparked some debate, the story continued with two subsequent shows: the sequel titled New Blood and the prequel Original Sin (both available to stream with a Paramount+ subscription that includes Showtime). Even though the first season has concluded, I can’t help but marvel at the spot-on portrayals of the original Dexter cast.

The season finale of “Dexter: Original Sin” was exhilarating as various storylines culminated during its airtime. With no updates on Season 2 yet, I can’t help but praise the remarkable acting skills displayed by the new cast members. They did a fantastic job imitating the original actors while still making their characters unique. One example is Patrick Gibson, who wonderfully mirrors Michael C. Hall’s vocal rhythm as the main character. His portrayal has a musical quality that echoes Hall’s voice, but it doesn’t feel overly influenced by this impression. Moreover, Hall’s narration further strengthens the sense of unity in the interpretation of the title role.

In addition to its main character, the ensemble cast of “Dexter: Original Sin” also delivers convincingly in their roles. James Martinez’s portrayal of beloved character Angel Bautista is particularly noteworthy and always leaves me impressed. He manages to emulate David Zayas’ physical and vocal nuances for the character so effectively that it seems as if he’s a younger version of the original actor on screen.

Similar to the initial Dexter series, the character Vince Masuka, who is more on the peripheral side, appears in Original Sin. However, actor Alex Shimizu doesn’t hold back at all and effectively brings out Masuka’s eccentric, signature laugh numerous times throughout the first season.

Additionally, it’s important to acknowledge the remarkable performance by actress/pop star Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta, mirroring the authenticity of her character with a striking resemblance to Lauren Vélez, her predecessor. Much like the other actors in the cast, she masterfully captures the unique vocal rhythm and speech pattern of Ms. Vélez. At moments, I found myself unable to distinguish between the two actresses. With Dexter: Original Sin being set within the Miami Metro area, this impressive acting coupled with the return to the familiar setting, creates a powerful sense of immersion for fans, rekindling their affection for the cherished series.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must admit that the Dexter franchise had its fair share of detours following the original series finale and his untimely demise in Resurrection. Yet, Original Sin seems to be a rejuvenating step back towards the show’s initial brilliance. I can hardly contain my excitement for the prequel, eagerly anticipating any updates on its future on Showtime. In the meantime, I’m catching up with all three Dexter shows that are currently streaming on Paramount+ alongside Showtime.
