Uncredited The Batman Co-Writer Opens Up About Credits Controversy

As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Mattson Tomlin’s journey through the world of filmmaking is one that resonates deeply with me. Like many artists, he has faced the bitter sting of anonymity, only to be vindicated by the chance to prove himself once more.

Mattson Tomlin, who collaborated on the script for “The Batman Part II” with director Matt Reeves, was also a co-writer for “The Batman”, although this isn’t immediately clear from the credits. Tomlin’s contribution to the screenplay went unacknowledged, with the credits solely acknowledging Reeves. Recently, Tomlin has spoken about the absence of credit for his work, stating that while he expected it, the omission still stings.

Mattson Tomlin recently discussed his new series, “Terminator Zero,” with The Hollywood Reporter and was questioned about his tenure on “The Batman” and its upcoming sequel, “The Batman Part II.” Tomlin disclosed his sentiments regarding being omitted from the original film’s credits. Although he joined the project late to polish the movie’s final act, he was informed that he probably wouldn’t receive credit for his contributions due to the project’s tight timeline. Yet, it was a source of disappointment for Tomlin to witness his diligent efforts on the film go unacknowledged in the credits. He elaborated:

As a film critic, I must confess that the experience of watching this movie was quite agonizing. I poured countless hours and emotions into its creation, only to find that it fell short in some critical areas. The third act was particularly challenging, but we also made significant strides in deepening the mystery and setting the tone for the first two acts. However, despite these efforts, it seemed as though my contributions might go unrecognized. Regrettably, this is all I can say about it.

I discovered that the Fandome trailer was released in August 2020. It felt exciting to see it, like ‘Here it finally is!’, but at the same time, it was a bittersweet realization that I’m no longer associated with this project.

However, Tomlin swiftly moved past his disappointment over not being included in the credits of ‘The Batman’. As a seasoned professional, he had anticipated that he might not receive credit, and thus chose to handle the situation accordingly.

“So nobody did anything to me. I wasn’t screwed over.

there was a level of, dare I say, having to grow up and having to go, ‘You know what? They paid me. I’m a professional, so be a professional and try not to take that too hard.'”

Although Tomlin didn’t receive credit for his work on The Batman, it has been confirmed that he has been involved with The Batman Part II since its initial planning. About six weeks following the release of The Batman, Tomlin disclosed that Matt Reeves called him and asked, “Are you ready to embark on this sequel journey? Do you want to be a part of it completely this time?”

Tomlin expressed his sense of validation by getting rehired for the sequel, as he now has a confirmed writing role. Yet, despite having contributed to one of the top-tier Batman films, Tomlin confessed that he was still plagued with intense apprehension about working on the sequel. He clarified his feelings:

“Impostor syndrome crept in, leaving me wondering if I’d merely be a footnote in someone’s Wikipedia entry, ‘Oh yeah, he was associated with that project, and that was his claim to fame?’ A wave of gloom and uncertainty washed over me. But somehow, it also sparked a determination within me – not a redemption, but a chance to prove myself, to finally take on the big responsibilities. So, I owe Matt Reeves a debt I can never repay; he’s transformed my life not just once, but three times over now.”

The Batman Part II
is currently tapped for release on October 2, 2026.
