Throughout the TV show, we were introduced to other characters, such as Cora’s mother, Martha Levinson, played by Shirley MacLaine, and her brother, Harold Levinson, portrayed by Paul Giamatti. I was taken aback when it was revealed that Giamatti, who only made a single appearance on Downton Abbey, would be reprising his role as Harold in Downton Abbey 3, one of the films slated for release in 2025. Now, I’m pleased to learn that he is finally discussing his return to the character.

Just a quick reminder: Harold, who made an appearance in “The London Season,” Downton Abbey‘s Christmas special from Season 4, is the character we’re referring to here. He was involved in the Teapot Dome Scandal but only received a reprimand when Robert Crawley testified about his brother-in-law’s character before Congress in the U.S. Instead of facing further scrutiny, Harold and his mother left for London as a temporary escape from public attention, despite his dislike of travel. While in London, he attended Lady Rose Aldrige’s debutante ball and befriended Madeleine Allsopp, daughter of Lord Aysgarth.
Downton Abbey 3’s Michelle Dockery On The ‘Beautiful’ Third Movie And Honoring Maggie Smith
As a devoted cinephile, I’ve always admired how the indomitable spirit of the Dowager Countess held the Downton Abbey franchise together like a precious family heirloom. In our upcoming film, we’re not just continuing her legacy; we’re elevating it in a heartfelt tribute to the extraordinary talent that is Dame Maggie Smith.
In this third installment, we delve deeper into the Dowager Countess’s wisdom, wit, and unwavering presence as she navigates new challenges with her signature elegance and sharp intellect. It’s a poignant celebration of her character, ensuring that her indelible mark on the Abbey endures for generations to come.
The special and Downton Abbey: A New Era take place in different years, with the former set in 1923 and the latter in 1928. Given this, it’s likely that Downton Abbey 3 will be set either in 1929 or during the early 1930s. This brings me to my first hypothesis about Harold Levinson: could his arrival potentially tie back to the Wall Street Crash of 1929? Perhaps, the Crawley family experiences financial difficulties due to this crash, and Harold, who Martha Levinson described as being “as rich as Croesus,” steps in to help them financially after having managed to preserve most, if not all of his fortune.
Discussing Martha, since the conclusion of Downton Abbey: A New Era depicted the demise of Maggie Smith’s character Violet Crawley (and her passing away in real life last September), it’s hard not to ponder if something similar might occur for Martha. In such a scenario, it would be logical for Harold to reconnect with Cora and Robert’s family, as they would presumably be mourning Martha. However, this doesn’t seem as significant as the hints being dropped by Paul Giamatti.
With “Downton Abbey 3” scheduled for release on September 12, we’re only half a year away from uncovering the mystery it promises. Additionally, Giamatti will portray the primary antagonist in “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” which is expected to debut on Paramount+ sometime between late 2025 and 2026.
