A series to maintain popularity often relies on more than just one character, even if it bears the name of a single character. This was evident in Ted Lasso‘s successful stint on Apple TV+. Led by Jason Sudeikis, the comedy series garnered numerous Emmy Awards and Golden Globes for several of its stars, including Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Sudeikis himself. With the announcement of a fourth season, fans are eagerly awaiting more from the cast and their beloved characters.
In the interim, fans can look forward to and appreciate Goldstein’s fresh comedy special, as there are still many exciting moments to anticipate. Will we finally discover what transpired between Jamie, Roy, and Keeley? Perhaps we’ll witness how Roy fares as a Premier League manager. No matter the outcome, it boasts one of the finest ensembles in recent memory. The show, however, isn’t solely about its primary stars. The broader cast, collectively, played an essential role in shaping the series. This includes minor characters who left a lasting impact on viewers through their allegiance (or lack thereof) towards AFC Richmond.
10
Dr. Sharon Fieldstone
Played by Sarah Niles
In the second season, AFC Richmond brings on a sports psychologist, Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, who becomes accessible to both the team and staff. She effectively assists team members with issues such as anxiety, personal struggles, and other concerns. Initially, Ted Lasso finds it hard to open up to Dr. Fieldstone. There’s an undercurrent of tension in their interactions that is unusual for Ted, as he typically interacts well with people. Ted is guarded and reluctant to discuss the reasons behind his panic attacks from the previous season.
As I sat down to pen my thoughts about this captivating series, I found myself reflecting on the enigmatic character of Dr. Fieldstone. Unlike many, she wasn’t swayed by Ted’s humor or charm; instead, her focus was fixed on understanding and healing his inner turmoil. The tension between them, stemming from Ted’s reticence, made for some intriguing viewing.
However, as the episodes unfolded, Dr. Fieldstone began to decipher the keys to connecting with Ted. By the time she bid adieu to the team at the end of Season 2, Ted was still reaching out to her for counsel in Season 3 – a testament to their bond that transcended physical proximity.
In essence, Dr. Fieldstone served as a guiding light for Ted, helping him recall the harsh realities of life while he was away from his family. Her character was a breath of fresh air, offering a unique perspective on the complexities of human relationships.
9
Isaac McAdoo
Played by Kola Bokinni
In Season 1, Isaac McAdoo serves as AFC Richmond’s vice-captain, contributing some memorable performances on the field, but not receiving much screen time otherwise, frequently being seen with Jamie Tartt. Following Roy Kent’s retirement, McAdoo takes over as team captain and his role in the series expands. Unlike Kent, he isn’t a particularly vocal leader and doesn’t rely on intimidation tactics to lead the team. However, he commands respect and his promotion within the team hierarchy results in increased involvement in the show.
McAdoo, well-known for his role, is particularly famous for the kangaroo court scene in the locker room, where he imposes fines on his teammates, thereby establishing “Ted Lasso” as a blend of sports drama and office comedy. Regularly taking charge after hours with strategic planning, McAdoo maintained a reserved persona. However, when he perceived disrespect, he would erupt in anger, such as smashing a TV upon hearing an interview where Jamie disparages AFC Richmond. This incident underscores his dual role as both a tranquil and assertive leader for AFC Richmond.
8
Flo “Sassy” Collins
Played by Ellie Taylor
Running a team and a business can be challenging, as Rebecca Welton discovers during the series. To make things easier, she surrounds herself with individuals who have a positive impact on her life, such as Keeley and Higgins. However, the person who reveals the true nature of Rebecca is her long-time friend, Flo “Sassy” Collins. Sassy reappears after six years without contact, but their friendship remains unchanged.
Brimming with sharp-tongued remarks, Sassy knows just the right moment to interject and deliver a crushing retort to those who warrant it. She’s never been fond of Rebecca’s ex, Rupert Mannion, and her scathing critique of him at Rebecca’s father’s funeral is a memorable scene in the series. She had a brief romance with Ted, providing him comfort and reducing his sense of loneliness while he was far from home. However, it’s Sassy’s iconic one-liners that earn her a spot on the list.
7
Rupert Mannion
Played by Anthony Head
In every production, there must be an antagonist, and that role was perfectly filled by Rupert Mannion. Once the proprietor of AFC Richmond, he passed control to his ex-spouse Rebecca but remained a frequent presence. He would make cameos in Season 1, flaunting his new love interest to inflict pain on Rebecca. Known for his wealth and penchant for dark clothing that stood out against Ted’s brighter attire, one memorable scene between Rupert and Ted involved a friendly game of darts, where Ted successfully humbled him – a moment cherished by many viewers.
Later on, Rupert gains ownership of West Ham and recruits Nathan Shelley from AFC Richmond. As the series progresses, Rupert’s underhanded tactics and questionable personal habits make him increasingly despised. Sassy’s frank critiques of him earn nods of approval from viewers. By the final season, Rupert receives his comeuppance. However, Anthony Head delivers a compelling performance as Mannion, adding depth to a show known for its optimism and wit.
6
Colin Hughes
Played by Billy Harris
In Season 3 of Ted Lasso, a significant plotline revolves around Colin Hughes, who undergoes a substantial character transformation. Initially, Colin is one of Jamie’s associates, known for his harsh words and bullying behavior. He symbolically discards the keys to his green Lamborghini during the exorcism scene, signifying a turning point. As he joins the coaching staff, Nathan Shelley berates him, but therapy sessions with Dr. Fieldstone help Colin overcome these challenges.
In the series, it’s Colin’s hidden sexuality that stands out. He’s secretly dating Michael and keeps their relationship under wraps among his teammates. One day, Trent Crimm, a journalist covering AFC Richmond, catches them together. Fearing exposure, Colin plays poorly and is benched. Throughout the season, Colin grapples with his identity, reluctant to be a representative for the LGBTQ+ community but yearning for a normal life. However, he finds support from many teammates during this time. After coming out to the team, his performance on the field improves significantly, as the burden of secrecy lifts and allows him to excel as a player. Colin’s character arc throughout the show is commendable and adds depth to the series.
5
Zava
Played by Maximilian Osinski
In the heat of our team’s Season 3 struggles, we manage to secure the services of a player, Zava, who mirrors soccer legend Zlatan Ibrahimović in many ways. Zava is an individualistic character, living largely within his own realm, yet he possesses immense wealth and unparalleled skill on the field. When our team finds itself in a tight spot, our owner, Rebecca Welton, steps up to convince him to join us. Despite Rupert and West Ham being considered frontrunners for his signature, Rebecca’s direct approach leaves an impression on Zava, leading him to respect her and agree to play for AFC Richmond.
Throughout the season, Zava displays diva-like behaviors alongside AFC Richmond’s victories. He insists on certain practices for the team, which border on the eccentric. The team’s approach shifts to simply passing him the ball and letting him perform. However, West Ham successfully counters him, prompting other teams to do the same. Consequently, Zava’s success as a striker dwindles, taking AFC Richmond’s victories with it. This leads to Zava mysteriously departing from the team. What makes him stand out is that he announces his retirement on social media and sends the team a massive avocado, hinting at his new life as an avocado farmer. It’s a peculiar farewell for an unusually distinctive character.
4
Phoebe
Played by Elodie Blomfield
Among all, Phoebe, Roy Kent’s niece, brings out the humble and gentle giant within him. While Roy expresses his deep affection for Phoebe through subtle actions, she demonstrates an intelligence and quick humor that belies her age. In a unique blend of love and language, Roy shows care towards her, despite occasional profanity, and consistently inspires her. Post-retirement, he even manages her youth soccer team, further emphasizing his dedication to her growth.
Phoebe’s unique trait lies in keeping Roy truthful. She tallies up his swear words to hold him accountable for his language. As the story progresses, we see Phoebe getting into trouble for her swearing at school, having a terrible breath problem that almost causes Roy to faint, and sketching scandalous images at school. Yet, she remains the cherished one in Roy’s eyes and helps him stay focused even during challenging times. Their relationship demonstrates how a strong exterior can soften for the right person.
3
Baz, Jeremy, and Paul
Played by Adam Colborne, Bronson Webb, and Kevin Garry
Among sports enthusiasts, there are some who stand out, such as Jeremy, Paul, and Baz. This dedicated trio represents the most devoted fans of AFC Richmond, a fact underscored by the series. Throughout all three seasons, these passionate supporters have captured the attention of viewers as they not only steal the spotlight but also share in every emotion experienced during an AFC Richmond game. They gather at their local pub, The Crown & Anchor, which is conveniently close to where Ted resides. In the initial episode, Baz confronts Ted directly, fearing that hiring him could potentially harm the club. However, as victories accumulate for AFC Richmond under Ted and Coach Beard’s leadership, the group gradually warms up to them.
During the entire series, viewers watch Jeremy, Paul, and Baz enthusiastically following matches and expressing their emotions towards significant events on the field. They offer a fan’s point of view, enriching our understanding of how each play within Ted Lasso resonates with everyday fans. The moments that stand out most are when they enjoy an evening out with Coach Beard (an event filled with unexpected quirks, as usual) and when they receive stock in AFC Richmond as a token of their dedication.
2
Trent Crimm
Played by James Lance
In Season 1, Trent Crimm, a journalist at The Independent, expressed doubts about hiring Ted. He grilled Ted with tough questions during press conferences and later penned an article critical of AFC Richmond’s coach. However, after sharing lunch with him, it turned out to be somewhat of a negative review. As the season progressed, it became apparent that Ted wasn’t as unconventional a choice for Premier League coaching as initially believed by Trent and others. Over time, Trent developed a level of trust with both Ted and Beard in the media scene.
In Season 3, Trent disclosed his intention to accompany AFC Richmond for the entire season, aiming to pen a book about Ted. Throughout this period, Trent gains exclusive access to the team and finds himself as Ted’s confidant. Eventually, he joins Ted’s close-knit group, known as the Wolf Pack, which includes Roy, Higgins, and Beard. Trent demonstrates his loyalty by confessing to Colin that he too is gay, thereby providing Colin with a relatable figure. His actions show genuine empathy, highlighting his transformation throughout the series.
1
Mae Green
Played by Annette Badland
Mae is the unique charm that makes her character impossible to forget. In the first season, Ted and Beard relocate to Richmond, and the neighborhood pub is managed by Mae. She’s a devoted supporter of AFC Richmond and deals with Baz, Jeremy, and Paul in a challenging yet affectionate manner. She doesn’t hesitate to call them out when they act foolishly. Whenever Ted or Beard need a cold beer, Mae is always ready to serve one up.
Despite appearing intimidating, it’s clear that she deeply cares for both the patrons and her team. Often, during matches, you can find her passionately yelling at the television screen, even while managing the bar. An interesting night unfolds when Beard shares his disappointment about his love life. Instead of comforting him, she swiftly reprimands him for a questionable football decision and advises against dwelling on his misfortune. However, Mae’s true nature lies in her unwavering dedication to her team’s success, making her an unforgettable figure in small yet significant ways.
