Universal Music Group announced a collaboration with Liquidax Capital, an intellectual property management firm, aimed at quickening the advancement of UMG’s patents related to artificial intelligence in the field of music. The news was shared on Tuesday.
In the recent announcement, Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s leading music corporation, disclosed that they have submitted 15 patent applications, without providing specifics about what these patents cover. However, UMG did mention that one key area of interest is AI threat protection. The other patent applications are concentrated on various aspects such as musical collaboration, multimedia content and campaign creation, health and music, music management, and rights administration. UMG confirmed that two of the patents have been granted, but declined to reveal which ones. When asked for additional information about the patents, a UMG representative did not respond immediately.
Through their collaboration, UMG and Liquidax established Music IP Holdings, Inc., a company that will grant licenses for UMG’s AI-related patents.
At Universal Music Group, we’re actively promoting innovation. Leveraging our past achievements in groundbreaking research, technological developments, and patent successes, we’re eager to boost our internal initiatives, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence technology,” stated Chris Horton, UMG’s senior vice president of Strategic Technology.
Universal Music Group’s declaration emerges amidst artificial intelligence continuing to be a significant concern within the music industry. This matter has made front-page news in the past few weeks, with AI band The Velvet Sundown amassing more than 1.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Key players within the industry have consistently argued that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could pose a risk to human creativity in music, but also offer a chance for transforming the process of creating and distributing music if used ethically, with the permission of artists and copyright holders. Last year, Universal Music Group (UMG) and other major record companies filed lawsuits against AI music generation companies Suno and Udio over claims of extensive copyright violation. However, UMG has shown an openness towards AI in music by entering into a partnership with SoundLabs last year to provide AI music technology to its artists.
Daniel Drolet, founder of Liquidax, expressed his delight and enthusiasm about partnering with Universal Music Group (UMG), a global pioneer in music innovation and ethical AI. Liquidax aims to strengthen UMG’s position as a leader and further develop their groundbreaking technologies, particularly AI, to benefit their artists, safeguard creative rights, foster collaborations, and boost fan experiences globally. We are ecstatic about this collaboration with UMG as we shape the future of music together.
