It’s important to clarify that despite its impressive mini-LED display, it encountered some blooming problems due to a relatively low number of dimming zones (1,024). Additionally, accessing the device for internal upgrades like RAM or storage was not straightforward, as is often the case with laptops. While these issues didn’t prevent me from using it effectively, I had hoped they would be improved upon in future iterations of the product.
It’s a joy to announce: the updated Strix Scar 16 model for 2025 has some fantastic enhancements all around and maintains its reputation as a top-tier gaming laptop. The price tag is steep, but if you’re ready to invest that amount, you’ll discover plenty of appealing features in what ASUS has crafted.

Portable Enough
Unlike Your Desktop Tower, It Fits In A Bag
To start off, it’s important to clarify that the ASUS Strix Scar 16 is not similar to a MacBook Air. Unlike Apple’s laptop which can comfortably last an entire workday without needing a charge, the Strix Scar 16, being more power-hungry, will manage only about three to four hours at most. However, if you adjust the settings in ASUS’s Armory Crate software to conserve energy, it can handle some tasks while unplugged. While it won’t leave you completely stranded if you need to make a quick edit to a presentation at the airport, this powerhouse laptop doesn’t truly excel in heavy-duty professional work on the go.
Those wanting more of a battery sipper should look to ASUS’s Zephyrus line of laptops.
As a movie buff who appreciates high-performance machines, I’d say the Scar 16 is more than just a laptop – it’s a desktop replacement designed for mobility. It’s built to handle your work and gaming needs seamlessly for years to come. With its robust capabilities and cooling system, don’t expect it to be lightweight or slim. But fear not, at 16 inches, it’s portable enough to pack for your business trips or holidays, as long as you’ve got a power outlet handy.
The ASUS Strix Scar 16 offers a suitable compromise between power and mobility; it’s not as convenient for travel as the 18-inch version, nor does it match the power of some smaller devices in other product lines. To find the sweet spot, you need to understand where the boundaries lie and ensure that your needs fall within this balance.
A New Look & Welcome Changes
ASUS Took What Was Already Good And Made It Better
In the year 2025, the updated version of the Scar 16 arrives with a fresh, sleeker chassis design. Notably, its RGB lighting strip has been extended to encircle the entire machine’s underside. Our review unit also features an AniMe Vision panel on the lid, allowing for personalized adjustments to display pixelated graphics or text. AniMe Vision is the most recent development from AniMe Matrix, a feature found in previous Zephyrus laptops like the Strix Scar line, and I must admit, it harmonizes beautifully with the gaming-centric style of this series.
The initial concerns I brought up have been effectively addressed. Firstly, the display now boasts a high-density mini-LED setup (2000+ zones) that enhances brightness and contrast, and the laptop’s internals can be accessed easily without any tools through its bottom plate. I am genuinely excited about these advancements, even though the shift to the superior mini-LED panel occurred in 2024. To me, this display is almost as stunning as OLED without some of the downsides associated with it. Lastly, the ability to replace the SSD without needing a screwdriver significantly enhances user experience.
This device offers a variety of connectivity options, including three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, two multi-function Thunderbolt 5/USB-C ports, an HDMI 2.1 port for high-definition video output, a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port for fast internet connectivity, and a 3.5mm audio jack for headphones or speakers. While it has plenty of ports for most users, content creators might miss the inclusion of an SD card slot. Personally, I don’t require one, so its absence didn’t bother me much.
If given a single wish based on my experience with some of the latest Zephyrus laptops, I’d desire for the Strix Scar series to incorporate the same speaker system. While the current audio is satisfactory, ASUS has significantly improved their gaming thin-and-lights in terms of sound quality with their 2024 and 2025 models. If they were to include that upgrade in their offerings, I can’t think of anything else I would need.
Desktop-Level Performance
There Won’t Be A Lot The Scar 16 Can’t Handle
The device before me sports an RTX 5080 graphics card, placing it at the same tier as the 4080 model I previously used in Nvidia’s latest lineup. In most games, you can anticipate a performance boost of around 15% to 20%, which translates to approximately 115-120 frames per second on the 5080 as opposed to the 100 frames per second you may have experienced with the 4080. This represents a considerable improvement, albeit regrettably, you’ll be paying slightly more for it than the 2023 model initially cost.
As a devoted gamer, I’ve had the pleasure of diving into an array of games from Forza Horizon 5 to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. In my gaming sessions, I’ve found it quite comfortable to push the settings to their limits and dive in. Interestingly, in the latter title, a more recent, hefty Unreal Engine 5 production, I managed to maintain a steady 55-60 frames per second at Epic settings, without utilizing DLSS upscaling. Given the game’s strategic turn-based battles, this was satisfactory for me. However, for frame rate enthusiasts, enabling DLSS Quality would bump your FPS into the mid 70s. For even better performance, dialing back this setting further would provide additional boosts.
Remember this when considering your purchase: The laptop’s high performance does come with a noticeable fan noise. This is because it packs desktop-level hardware into a compact design. However, switching to Silent mode in Armory Crate can help you run many games at playable frame rates with reduced fan noise. For instance, Clair Obscur performs around 50 FPS on Epic settings with DLSS balanced in the Strix Scar 16’s Silent mode. This option is feasible, but it does mean you’ll be giving up a significant amount of power, which is what you’re really paying for. If noise isn’t a concern and you aren’t in a quiet environment like a library, go ahead and let the laptop run on Turbo mode with a good quality headset.
The ScreenRant Verdict: Recommended
A Big Investment But Worth Every Penny
The ASUS Strix Scar 16 from 2025 continues to build on its reputation as an elite gaming laptop, placing it among the best in the current market. With a powerhouse performance that allows for smooth gameplay across the board, and a portable design suitable for travel, this laptop doesn’t disappoint. Although its $3,300 MSRP is a significant investment, the 5080 version offers a balance between cost and performance, making it a more budget-friendly option compared to the pricier 5090 edition available at Best Buy for an additional $1,000. Our review unit shares many of the same premium features as the higher-end model, delivering a formidable punch just the same. If I were in the market, this would be the one I’d choose.
This device might not be ideal for those who game casually. If you fall under this category, you may find that you’re not fully utilizing its capabilities and end up with a heavier laptop as well. As previously mentioned, you might want to consider ASUS’s Zephyrus series instead. Although it offers less power, it provides a more user-friendly experience similar to a MacBook.
If you’re mainly into PC gaming and are looking for a high-end device that will serve as both your home setup and travel companion for an extended period, then the Strix Scar 16 is worth considering, despite its hefty cost. It’s a significant investment, but one that could prove to be well worth it.
