For ten years, starting from 2013, the TV series titled The Blacklist, broadcast on NBC, captivated viewers and kept them on tenterhooks. Even now, it maintains an impressive 91% rating among critics and a 79% approval from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. To this very day, fans are still debating the unresolved mysteries of the show, more than a year after it concluded its run. The narrative revolved around Raymond “Red” Reddington, a once government agent turned fugitive who struck an agreement with the FBI: in return for his liberty, he would assist them in apprehending individuals on his infamous “blacklist.
This list spotlights some of the world’s most notorious mafia leaders, spies, and terrorists being monitored by the FBI, a roster of America’s most sought-after fugitives, whose kind of criminal activities are intricate enough to be comprehended only by a mind like Red’s to apprehend. The concept resonated with viewers nationwide, but it was the enigma surrounding the identity and true intentions of the character known as “Red” that kept audiences hooked week after week – who is Ray, AKA “Red,” truly, and what are his genuine reasons for entering into this agreement with the FBI?
Who Is Red on the Surface?
Ray “Red” Reddington is renowned for his cunning intellect and ruthless nature, placing him among the FBI’s most wanted individuals. His intelligence allows him to easily read and control others, while his lack of compassion towards many makes him both an invaluable ally and a potential hazard to those around him. Although he doesn’t take pleasure in causing harm, he’s not against it – he sees it as a tool, sometimes necessary for achieving his goals, particularly when dealing with the individuals on his blacklist.
Red remains a puzzling and elusive figure, with the storyline carefully crafted to keep his true intentions and identity shrouded in mystery. The other characters are limited to what he chooses to reveal, making it unclear how much is truth and how much is manipulation. Consequently, the audience is presented with fragments of information that may not add up to a complete picture. However, these tantalizing morsels have fueled fan speculations and theories about Red’s true nature, as fans tend to do when faced with such enigmatic characters in their favorite shows.
What Does Red Want?
In addition to his liberty, it’s stipulated that Red must collaborate with a specific investigator – Elizabeth Keen – when working with the government. The reason for his affinity towards her remains unclear to the other agents and viewers alike, sparking curiosity as to why he is so determined to work with her. Despite the show being filled with numerous suspenseful and enigmatic elements, this particular mystery holds the most captivation – audiences are intrigued by trying to decipher who Liz Keen is to Red, and why he desires to be a part of her life so profoundly. Throughout the series, the connection between Red and Liz, as well as his emotional investment in her, serves as one of the primary mysteries that both the characters on screen and viewers at home grapple with.
As the series unfolded, hints regarding Red’s enigmatic past and peculiar ties with Liz gradually surfaced. By the culmination of Liz’s narrative in Season 8, she came to suspect that Red was her biological father. Many viewers shared this conviction at the time, despite his denial, due to the mounting evidence. After he had disclosed most of his past details, it appeared evident that he might be connected to her as a parent.
Who Is Red, Really?
From my perspective as a movie critic, let me say that throughout its entire run, The Blacklist left its viewers hanging with regards to the true identity of its central character, Red. As one would anticipate from such skillful storytellers, they presented tantalizing ambiguities rather than providing clear-cut resolutions.
The closest the audience came to a revelation was during the final episode, when Red was conversing with Liz’s daughter, Agnes. In their exchange, Agnes quipped that Red sounded like a mom, and he responded by confessing that he simply couldn’t help it. This seemingly innocuous interaction sparked speculation among fans about the possibility of a hidden truth in this statement.
It’s not explicit confirmation, but the series appears to be subtly suggesting to fans that their theory about Red being Liz’s mother, and previously Katarina Rostova, holds water. If this is indeed the direction the creators intended, it would imply that Red underwent a transformation and adopted a new identity before the show began – a plot twist that could have been intriguing, but perhaps it was best for the storyline to remain unexplored in The Blacklist, as many viewers might have doubted the show’s capacity to handle such a complex theme with sensitivity and depth.
In a show like The Blacklist, which thrives on suspense and enigma, this potential response comes the closest fans will ever get to discovering Red’s true identity. It may not be definitive, but it’s the nearest we’ll ever come, since the truth remains elusive.
