‘Until Dawn’ Featurette Reveals First Look at Highly Anticipated Adaptation

Fancy another movie about time loops? Here’s some exciting news: Sony Pictures has unveiled a sneak peek at the upcoming film adaptation of the popular horror video game, “Until Dawn.” This game revolves around a group of eight young friends who must survive a night on Blackwood Mountain, pursued by a murderer. Similar to other video game adaptations, this movie will not follow the original story but will feature a new set of characters experiencing the butterfly effect, a mechanic that made the game so popular.

The fresh footage spotlights the skilled crew crafting the upcoming horror remake, along with their innovative strategy for the universe of “Until Dawn.” In this behind-the-scenes segment, director David F. Sandberg, who has worked on successful horror films like “Lights Out” and “Annabelle: Creation,” as well as writer Gary Dauberman (co-writer of “It” and “The Nun”) discuss how the game’s choose-your-own-adventure narrative will be translated into a time loop that the characters find themselves trapped in until, you guessed it, morning.

Star-Studded Video Game Becomes Star-Studded Movie

As per director Sandberg, an innovative aspect of the game is that players make distinct decisions leading to diverse demises. This filmic adaptation incorporates a similar feature, where events restart, allowing characters to retry their attempts. Each resurrection feels like stepping into a fresh horror genre to stay alive until dawn. Although the teaser trailer is brief at the moment, Sony has hinted that the complete trailer will be released shortly. In the meantime, fans can peruse the updated storyline summary provided below.

One year following her sister Melanie’s puzzling disappearance, Clover and her companions venture into an isolated valley, the same location where Melanie vanished, seeking answers. As they explore an old visitor center, they are pursued by a masked assassin who gruesomely slays them one by one…yet each time, they mysteriously awaken and discover themselves back at the start of the very same evening. Caught in this valley, they are compelled to endure this harrowing event over and over again – with each repetition, the danger escalates, becoming increasingly terrifying. As their hope fades, the group comes to understand that they have a finite number of deaths allowed, and the only means of escape is by surviving until dawn.

In the initial release of the video game “Until Dawn”, star-studded actors like Brett Dalton, Rami Malek, Galadriel Stineman, and Hayden Panettiere graced our screens. Consequently, the cast of the movie version faced a challenge as they tried to match those impressive performances. However, the film’s new characters, including Ella Rubin from “The Idea of You”, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, and Odessa A’zion known for her role in Hulu’s “Hellraiser”, are stepping into some well-trodden territory.

In contrast to many of the other actors who are making their franchise debut, Peter Stormare – a veteran in the movie industry known for films such as “Fargo,” “Armageddon,” and “John Wick 2” – will be returning to his role from the original game as Dr. Hill. With a skilled cast and guidance from horror director Sandberg, the upcoming adaptation of “Until Dawn” appears set to become a successful horror film, much like its video game counterpart.

Until Dawn has a release date of April 25, 2025.
