The following contains spoilers for Severance Season 2, Episode 1.
Following its lengthy break, the initial episode of Severance season two debuted on Apple TV+ on January 17, leaving quite a few viewers puzzled about Helly’s character. Fortunately, creator Dan Erickson provided some enlightening insights into the thought processes of Helly and the other characters in the premiere during a recent interview.
Discussing the dramatic comeback with Variety, Erickson addressed some intriguing questions regarding the events that had unfolded. You might recall that in the previous season finale, the group managed to catch a glimpse of their lives beyond work using the Overtime Contingency. It was unveiled that Helly’s counterpart on the outside is none other than Helena Eagan, daughter of Lumon’s founding family and the embodiment of the severance process itself. In the situation where she must disclose this truth to her peers and colleagues, however, Helly chooses to deceive them about her identity. When asked about Helly’s decision to mislead the Innies, Erickson explained:
In some fashion or another, every character was shaken by what they witnessed. When they return, each must decide how much of their experience they’re prepared to disclose. Helly stumbled upon the most dreadful revelation possible – she has discovered she shares a trait with those she despises most. This realization brings a heavy burden of shame, and she fears her friends may reject her due to their hostility towards the Eagans, of which she is now a part. She wishes to avoid carrying this unwanted burden.
Erikson observes a strengthening sense of unity among the innies, but Helly’s deception may strain this fragile relationship. The innies are already struggling to trust their thoughts and environment, but when they lose faith in each other, the group will face its toughest challenges yet. If Helly’s lie is exposed, it could have disastrous consequences for the group’s objective. It appears that Irving has a feeling that something is amiss with Helly’s tale, but he hasn’t pursued it (at least not publicly, for now).
Questions We Want Answered In Season 2
The series Severance focuses on Mark (Adam Scott), Helly (Britt Lower), Dylan (Zach Cherry), and Irving (John Turturro). They’ve all experienced a procedure where their consciousness is split, keeping their personal lives hidden from their work lives. They function at Lumon Industries, a company known for this questionable technology, unaware of their lives outside work. During work hours, they are their “innie” self, while their “outie” (their real self) takes over once they leave the premises of Lumon.
In simpler terms, the first episode of season two, named “Hello, Ms. Cobel,” was penned by Erikson and helmed by Ben Stiller. It resumed the story where we last left off in Season 1’s finale, showing the characters back at work after an undetermined duration. Although their disjointed minds make it tricky to pinpoint the exact time gap, the reason for the leap between seasons eventually becomes clear.
The Season 1 finale left a lot of mysteries unresolved, sparking debate among viewers for years about what might transpire in Season 2. The employees, known as “innies,” are grappling with a dilemma: either depart Lumon, effectively disappearing, or remain workers. This season, spectators eagerly anticipate discovering the reason behind Lumon’s existence and the nature of the Severance process. After their unauthorized extended work hours, the innies can expect increased scrutiny. Let’s hope this doesn’t hinder them from further investigating the office layout.
In a subtle hint, Erickson suggested that Miss Cobel, who was dismissed, might find herself back in the spotlight at the Eagan gala, implying some internal shifts in Lumon’s leadership. These changes could stir up tension among the employees, but to what extent remains to be seen. Additionally, these upheavals could potentially offer Miss Cobel or other characters chances to assert power.
Meanwhile, fans are eagerly anticipating more insights into Irving’s storyline. It’s been disclosed that his exterior self is probing Lumon. The intelligence he’s amassed so far might shed light on the company’s shadowy operations. Irving’s covert abilities within Lumon are impressive, and it’ll be fascinating to discover whether he shares or conceals this information with his fellow employees.
The audience was given a glimpse into the Eagan family, yet it’s evident there are deeper secrets waiting to be discovered. The reasons behind Helena Eagan’s departure and whether she intended for Helly to act as an undercover agent are still uncertain. Another enigma is Ms. Casey, also known as Mark’s supposedly deceased wife, Gemma. Upon discovering her true identity, Innie Mark hastened back to the office in search of her. When questioned about his feelings towards Ms. Casey, Erickson shared that Mark feels a sense of duty towards his outie to assist her; however, the extent of his willingness to help remains to be seen. Season 2 is expected to delve into Gemma’s past through flashbacks or additional context, explaining what led to her disappearance, how she was believed to have died in the outside world, and why she now resides at Lumon.
