If you’re a fan of Christopher Nolan’s outstanding superhero film “The Dark Knight”, you might have encountered some peculiar search results lately due to a new venture by the contentious filmmaker Uwe Boll. Surprisingly, Boll has titled his latest project “The Dark Knight” as well. Not long after this announcement, Warner Bros. Discovery swiftly responded with a Cease & Desist notice, given that they own the rights to all things related to the Caped Crusader, including the names used in Nolan’s trilogy. However, Boll seems unphased by their request and has no intention of complying with it.
Boll has often found himself in disputes. Initially, many critics were unimpressed with his movies, particularly since they were adaptations of video games. However, things didn’t improve much in the 2010s, as one after another, his films turned out to be duds. Despite the frequent criticism directed at his work, Boll seemed to struggle to grasp it, leading to notoriety that even inspired documentaries about his responses.
Following the announcement of “The Dark Knight,” the project drew attention for reasons beyond its director and debatable title, primarily due to the choice to cast Armie Hammer as the lead. Given that he faced severe allegations, such as sexual assault in 2021, it was inevitable that his casting would raise questions. Although this issue might seem like another hurdle for the movie, Boll addressed Warner Bros. Discovery’s legal demand on his podcast by stating:
“I’ve been informed by DC and Warner that I can’t employ the chosen title. While I comprehend their position, I reminded them of the film ‘Rampage,’ starring The Rock, where they utilized a similar title. Given their past actions and reaching out to me for permission this time, it would be gracious of them to acknowledge that it’s not a Batman movie and allow me to keep the title.
Subsequently, as anticipated, Boll made a series of contentious statements, which might not necessarily benefit his own interests. In the past, this director has expressed contempt for contemporary superhero films and, in 2011, he created a satire titled Blubberella. Furthermore, his recent comment after receiving a note from WBD only served to fan the flames: “Most of the DC and Marvel films are poor. They’re overly long with excessive CGI, everything is artificial, and the stories are weak. Particularly Batman, how many versions of Batman do we need to watch? They’re all disappointing.
Hammer & Boll’s ‘The Dark Knight‘ Is Already Polarizing
In a new undertaking, Armie Hammer has teamed up with Costas Mandylor for a storyline revolving around an individual who metes out justice independently. Hammer assumes the role of Sanders, a character pursuing wrongdoers, while Mandylor portrays an Interpol officer charged with halting him. It’s worth noting that despite its efforts to distinguish itself from the film it shares its title with, The Dark Knight bears some resemblance to a movie about a man who prefers to apprehend criminals beyond the legal system.
Despite his claims to the contrary, Hammer appears to be making efforts to revive his acting career, though it’s doubtful that “The Dark Knight” will be the film to achieve that. His upcoming Western, titled “Frontier Crucible,” is shrouded in mystery, but reports suggest he’s been refusing roles. However, he’s accepted a role from Boll, a director known for producing low-quality movies. It’s unclear whether this collaboration came about through Hammer reaching out or vice versa, but there’s a hint of uncertainty regarding how this partnership will unfold.
