Vacheron Constantin’s Iconic Historiques 222 Arrives in Contemporary Steel

To celebrate its 270th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin has revealed a stainless steel version of their Historiques 222 reference. First introduced in 1977, this model is one of the brand’s most identifiable designs. Dressed in modern steel and priced more affordably than its luxury counterpart, the new 222 retains all its vintage elegance as originally designed by Jorg Hysek during the ’70s. The watch features a 37mm case size, slim profile, matching integrated bracelet, and a fluted bezel adorned with the Maltese cross – details that have been meticulously redesigned. Even the movement is the same, using the ultra-thin 2455/2 caliber that was also incorporated in the 2022 yellow gold remake.

This contemporary version, often referred to as “Jumbo” by enthusiasts, boasts a dial of deep blue hue. It has undergone several technical advancements, for instance, redesigned bracelet joints hidden behind visible pins that improve comfort and the wearer’s experience. Additionally, it comes equipped with a triple-blade clasp for heightened safety. A special signature engraving on the caseback celebrates the Maison’s 270th anniversary, and it also showcases a transparent sapphire crystal, granting a sneak peek into its in-house movement.

As a gamer, I can say that this new watch model has stepped up its game significantly! It maintains the grace and precision of its older sibling, but now it boasts a smoother 4 Hz movement for more precise timekeeping. Plus, it’s got an impressive 40-hour power reserve to keep it ticking longer. The date window has been shifted closer to the center of the dial for a more harmonious look, and even the hands and hour markers have been treated with Super-LumiNova – just like the old-school watches used to glow with tritium.

The latest steel-cased Historiques 222 model retails for $32,000 USD and can only be purchased at Vacheron Constantin’s retail stores. For further details, please check out their official website.
