Val Kilmer Almost Rejected Top Gun Role Until Tom Cruise Changed His Mind

I was privileged to bear witness to the exceptional acting talent of one of the greatest actors of his time. His presence in numerous films undeniably elevated them, adding a layer of authenticity and depth that would have been absent otherwise. If it weren’t for him stepping into the role all those years ago in the 1986 film, the creation of “Top Gun: Maverick” might never have materialized. Indeed, the possibility of its absence from our screens over three decades later was a very real one until he successfully persuaded the original star to reprise his iconic role.

As Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Kilmer delivered a standout performance that has become synonymous with his name, paving the way for his return in “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022. However, in a recent interview, Cruise shared memories of how his friend and co-star initially declined to join the film, requiring persuasion to be a part of it. Speaking with Sight & Sound, Cruise reminisced about this experience.

I was incredibly thankful that he agreed to produce the film. We put in a great deal of effort to get him involved in this project. At first, he wasn’t interested in making the movie, stating, “I don’t want to be a supporting actor; I want to star in films.” I even contacted his agent, while Tony Scott pursued him relentlessly, cornering him in an elevator and pleading with Val, saying, “Val, please consider it.

He was an exceptional actor and charismatic individual, isn’t that right? In that particular scene, what really impressed me was his ability to strike the perfect tone. He needed to portray their friendship convincingly in the end. Do you recall my meaning? I still vividly remember acting alongside him, during those scenes where he performed the ‘bite’ gesture. You know, when you act with someone and they’re burning with passion? It’s electrifying. That’s when the scene takes on a life of its own.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Became an Emotional Coda to Kilmer’s Career

Upon its long-awaited cinema release due to the Covid pandemic, Top Gun: Maverick surpassed all box office predictions to become the top-earning movie of the year. A key factor in elevating the film even higher was the poignant, albeit brief, performance by Kilmer as Kazansky.

In the film, they skillfully wove Tom Cruise’s real-life cancer struggle into his character’s narrative, yet the movie didn’t achieve widespread success solely due to Kilmer’s presence. However, the emotional reunion scene between Iceman and Maverick resonated deeply with viewers, prompting some to rewatch it in theaters multiple times, while others were inspired to watch it for the first time.

Ever since its premiere on Paramount+, the film has consistently ranked among the Top 10 movies on the platform, and now, three years later, it’s back at the number one spot after spending nearly 800 days there. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, this could be your opportunity! And since the original movie is also available on Paramount+, why not enjoy a double feature in honor of Val Kilmer?
