Fans of Val Kilmer are rediscovering a lesser-known gem, as the prison drama “The Salton Sea” has found its way onto a popular streaming service’s top charts this week. Making its debut on the platform, this movie is an overlooked addition to Kilmer’s extensive filmography, and boasts impressive performances from Stephen Dorff and Harold Perrineau. This film, based on real events that occurred at California State Prison, Corcoran in the 1990s, is now being discovered by a new audience.
In the movie “Felon,” character Wade Porter, played by Stephen Dorff, is a family man who ends up in prison after defending himself against a burglar, resulting in a manslaughter conviction. Imprisoned in a notoriously tough penitentiary, he’s stuck between dangerous inmates and manipulative guards. His cellmate is John Smith (Kilmer), an experienced convict who has served multiple life sentences for murders. Despite their contrasting backgrounds, they form an unexpected alliance. However, the guards’ corruption and their instigation of violence result in dire consequences as they strive to reveal the mistreatment inside the prison.
The felon movie garnered a decent 60% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and an even more impressive 82% approval from audiences. However, due to a limited U.S. release, its audience growth was primarily driven by DVD sales. Now, on Tubi, the film is at last receiving some well-deserved recognition.
Val Kilmer Is an Incredible and Often Underrated Actor
Although Kilmer is famed for his notable performances in films like Willow, Top Gun, and Batman Forever, it’s worth noting that he has also acted in numerous movies that tend to be overlooked or forgotten over time. Yet, the charm of streaming services lies in their ability to reintroduce many films thought to have been lost to history, giving fans an opportunity to rewatch classics or discover hidden gems for the first time.
For now, “Top Gun: Maverick” from 2022 continues to soar in popularity on Paramount+, a movie that is far from being obscure or overlooked. Kilmer’s unexpected cameo in the sequel of “Top Gun” was one of the factors contributing to Tom Cruise’s film becoming the most successful of the year, and it resonated deeply with fans as it subtly wove Kilmer’s personal health challenges into the narrative of his character, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
65-year-old actor Val Kilmer is once again at the center of a social media movement aiming to release Joel Schumacher’s extended cut of “Batman Forever.” For years, fans have been advocating for the so-called “Schumacher Cut,” which allegedly delves deeper into Bruce Wayne’s mind and psychology. With the film reaching its 30th anniversary this year, there is renewed hope that Kilmer’s portrayal of Batman will finally be shared with audiences worldwide.
