Kurt Russell Leads the Pack Alongside Val Kilmer in ‘Tombstone’
The 1993 Western film “Tombstone” offers a thrilling retelling of the violent encounters like the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the Earp Vendetta Ride, featuring an impressive ensemble cast led by Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot, and Bill Paxton. The movie focuses on the legendary lawmen, Wyatt Earp (Russell), Virgil Earp (Elliot), Morgan Earp (Paxton), and Doc Holliday (Kilmer), as they confront the dangerous Cowboy gang in an attempt to establish justice in Tombstone.
In the small town of Tombstone, unease is spreading and conflicts intensify between opposing factions. The valiant Earp brothers, along with their well-known associate Holliday, are gearing up for a fatal confrontation to drive outlawry from the town forever. Following a tragic ambush that occurs after a famous gunfight, claiming the life of one of their own, a relentless Wyatt vows revenge and will go to any lengths to eradicate the Cowboys and their brutal leader “Curly Bill” Brocius, portrayed by Powers Boothe.
‘Tombstone’ Emerges as a Beloved Cult Classic Hit
In an effort to create a historically accurate Western, Director George P. Cosmatos enlisted the help of notable actors such as Charlton Heston, Billy Bob Thornton, Michael Rooker, and Billy Zane. To achieve authenticity, he paid close attention to details like costumes, sets, props, and customs that were typical of the period. However, it was later revealed by lead actor Kurt Russell that he, not Cosmatos, was largely responsible for directing the film. The studio had brought in Cosmatos as a sort of “ghost director,” a move intended to keep secret Russell’s involvement in the production since he wished to remain behind the scenes.
In an August 2017 blog post, Val Kilmer backed up Russell’s claims, stating that “Kurt was undoubtedly the driving force behind the success of Tombstone.” Despite Kevin Jarre initially being set to direct the Western, he struggled with production and lagged behind schedule, leading to his dismissal and the hiring of Cosmatos. However, it was Russell who took charge on set, as Kilmer also noted.
Kurt’s dedication is truly inspiring. Instead of using energy for his own role, he chose to invest it in ensuring the movie’s success. While everyone else showed concern, Kurt took action by putting his commitment into practice.
The movie titled “Tombstone” premiered on Christmas Day in 1993 and turned out to be a massive success, raking in $73.2 million worldwide while only costing $25 million to produce. It was both a critical and audience favorite, earning an impressive A− CinemaScore from viewers and a 93% rating on the Popcornmeter. Shortly after its release, True West Magazine hailed it as one of the top five greatest Westerns ever made. The film was widely acclaimed for its meticulously researched script, captivating ensemble performances (with Val Kilmer’s portrayal of the tough Doc Holliday being particularly commended), and exhilarating action scenes.
32 years ago, the captivating Western movie “Tombstone” premiered to great fanfare, but unfortunately, a competing film starring Kevin Costner titled “Wyatt Earp” released six months prior overshadowed it. Despite this, over time, “Tombstone” has risen in popularity and is now considered a cult classic among Western enthusiasts. Its impressive cast chemistry has kept the movie relevant, appealing to both new and long-time fans. You can rent “Tombstone” on Prime Video today.
