Van Gogh Painting Expected to Fetch $50 Million USD at Christie’s

As a seasoned gamer with an eye for art and a knack for history, I must admit that the upcoming auction of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Les canots amarrés” at Christie’s Hong Kong has me both excited and slightly overwhelmed. Having traversed through countless virtual landscapes in my gaming escapades, it’s fascinating to see how artists like Van Gogh capture a slice of life in such a dreamy, immersive way.

For the first time in three decades, Vincent Van Gogh’s “Moored Boats” will be auctioned at Christie’s Hong Kong. This masterpiece is anticipated to sell for between 230 million and 380 million HK dollars (approximately 30 million to 50 million USD), making it the most costly artwork from Van Gogh’s Parisian period.

For several decades, this painting was part of the Royal Family of Bourbon-Two Sicilies’ collection, a lineage stemming from the monarchs who once governed Sicily and southern Italy. Artnet reports that the artwork was initially bought by Italian actress Edy Vessel at Sotheby’s London in 1991. Now, it is being offered for sale by Princess Camilla, Vessel’s daughter, who inherited it through a family trust.

The docked boats are part of a series of three summer scenes set in Asnières, which were painted during Van Gogh’s two-year residence in France. Incorporating the freshness of the air and the warmth of the light, the artist chose to depict nature as it intertwined with the burgeoning industrialization in France. This piece serves as a snapshot of daily life, rendered in a dreamlike style that would become synonymous with his artistic style.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming auction of this artwork is expected to break the record for the most expensive Western piece sold in Asia. This masterpiece surpasses the $323.6 million HK ($41.7 million USD) fetching price of ‘Warrior’ by Jean-Michel Basquiat from 2021. The art piece, titled “Les canots amarrés“, is Claude Monet’s Nymphéas, and it’s predicted to be priced between $200 million to $280 million HK ($25 million to $35 million USD). This magnificent artwork will take center stage at the grand opening of The Henderson on September 26, 2024.
