Plot:
As a dedicated follower of gritty, empowering dramas that leave a lasting impact, I found “Vedaa” to be right up my alley. Having lived through various social struggles myself, I can relate to the raw, unfiltered portrayal of casteism in this film.
John Abraham‘s character, Abhimanyu, served in the Gorkha Regiment but was dismissed due to disobeying orders during a mission in disputed Kashmir controlled by Pakistan. He no longer qualifies for any further government aid or advantages from India.
In the town of Barmer, Rajasthan, caste-based discrimination is rampant, particularly affecting families like Vedaa’s (Sharvari), who belong to the Dalit community, historically oppressed by the upper classes. Abhimanyu, a trainer, has been employed in Barmer to guide young adults. Despite her eagerness to learn boxing, Vedaa is denied training with the group. However, Abhimanyu takes it upon himself to coach her privately and helps her develop fighting skills.
In the town of Barmer, will Vedaa succeed in combating casteism or will she become another revolutionary who ultimately succumbs to those with greater influence? Discover the fate of Abhimanyu by watching Vedaa.
What works for Vedaa:
“Vedaa is a hard-hitting, impactful drama that perfectly strikes its emotional chords. It’s incredibly empowering with a gripping narrative throughout. The acting is outstanding; John Abraham delivers a subdued performance while Sharvari demonstrates star quality, and Abhishek Banerjee skillfully evokes loathing. The action sequences are breathtakingly spectacular – they’re sure to make you cheer and applaud. They’re expertly filmed, and your eyes will be dazzled. Vedaa is a film that offers hope. In today’s context, it’s particularly poignant; sadly, its themes remain painfully relevant in light of the recent global tragedies.”
What doesn’t work for Vedaa:
Vedaa’s story or concept is not novel. It has conflicts which we have grown up watching. Brownie points to team Vedaa for the execution, which is nothing short of remarkable. Vedaa does take cinematic liberties which slightly dilute the impact. The run-time could have been little shorter. Rest, Vedaa is a great watch.
