The French footwear brand VEJA collaborates with Dover Street Market Ginza to reveal a unique capsule collection. This exclusive assortment consists of individually crafted pairs of shoes, skillfully made by the Sashiko Gals – a team of artisans known for their expertise in customizing and mending clothing using traditional techniques. Starting next week, only ten pairs of VEJA’s latest “Panenka” design will be available for purchase at Dover Street Market’s Tokyo store.
The shoe design, reminiscent of old-school football trainers, showcases an artisanal charm through the age-old Sashiko mending technique. Originated as far back as the 8th century, this Japanese method of strengthening garments has evolved into a distinctive aesthetic, characterized by intricate patterns and various thread colors. Located in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, the “Sashiko Gals” are a talented group of women in their 40s to 80s who have mastered this ancient art form.

A key aspect of VEJA’s “Clean, Fix, Gather” initiative is its emphasis on promoting circularity by fixing items instead of contributing to the waste problems faced by the fashion industry. This initiative was started four years ago as environmental concerns grew more pressing, and in June 2020, it launched its cobbler project in Bordeaux, France. Now, VEJA is extending this project to Japan, tailoring it for Japanese audiences to preserve a longstanding tradition of textile repair.
For approximately $1000 USD, these highly exclusive shoe pairs cost 165,000 yen, reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship involved in their production. Dover Street Market Ginza will be offering these shoes for sale on March 28-29, but only while supplies last.
