Velma Returning to Max for New Halloween Special

Velma Returning to Max for New Halloween Special

As a long-time fan of Scooby-Doo and a connoisseur of reboots, I must say that Velma has left me scratching my magnifying glass in confusion. The first season was as puzzling as a haunted mansion, with its 7% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes making it seem like it was designed to scare away viewers rather than entertain them.

Making a comeback this October is Max, serving up a unique Halloween special titled “Velma: This Halloween Demands Something Extraordinary!” Despite receiving negative feedback from both audiences and critics during its first two seasons, it appears that the heavily criticized show won’t be disappearing anytime soon.

It appeared as though Velma’s journey had reached its conclusion when she was written off at the end of Season 2, but it turns out this isn’t true. Now, there seems to be an opportunity for Velma’s spirit and the gang to revive her – a sign that points towards the possibility of Season 3 actually happening. The description for the special goes:

In only 24 hours, the group is on a quest to find a mysterious, dark spellbook to save Velma, all while keeping clear of a vengeful specter’s anger. Yet, as the Sexy Halloween celebration draws near, Velma and her companions will confront their deepest fears – if they are to survive this ordeal together.

In the upcoming episodes, you’ll find Mindy Kaling reprising her role as the main character, with series regulars Glen Howerton, Sam Richardson, and Constance Wu by her side. This season also boasts an impressive ensemble, featuring Russell Peters, Sarayu Blue, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Frank Welker, Nicole Byer, Gary Cole, Andia Winslow, Sara Ramirez, Nicholas Braun, Fortune Feimster, Jennifer Hale, Richard Kind, Jason Mantzoukas, Saweetie, Debby Ryan, and Kulap Vilaysack.

Is Velma Really Hated as Much as It Seems?

Despite most shows receiving some criticism, the first season of Velma garnered more negative feedback than usual. Given the drastic alterations made to a well-established franchise, it’s not surprising that many viewers found the new version difficult to recognize. The show received a 38% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but this paled in comparison to the 7% score from audiences. It was reported that production for Season 2 had already begun before the series premiered, which may have been the only reason it returned earlier this year.

In a slightly different wording: The second season saw an improvement in audience ratings with a 13% score, yet out of three critics who reviewed it, only one gave a favorable review. The fervor for criticizing the show seems to have lessened (with roughly 250 viewers reviewing Season 2 compared to over 10,000 for Season 1). However, the announcement of a special episode has sparked renewed discussions about why the series persists when so many other well-liked shows have been discontinued.

It remains to be seen if Velma’s latest release will manage to improve its fortunes with this new Halloween-themed offering. Fans won’t have to wait long, as the show Velma: This Halloween Needs a Little Extra Magic! premieres on Max on October 3. Be prepared.
