As a lifelong fan of comic book movies, I must admit my excitement for the latest Venom installment, “Venom: The Last Dance,” was somewhat dampened by its underwhelming domestic box office performance. Despite the film’s impressive overseas earnings and the fact that it’s still set to top the charts, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment as a die-hard Venom fan.
The movie “Venom: The Last Dance” is struggling to make a strong debut at the domestic box office, as it’s currently falling significantly short of its projected $65 million opening weekend. Based on current trends, Sony predicts that the third installment will only bring in around $52 million from 4,131 screens.
Some attribute the drop in revenues to the intense competition from the World Series battle between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. While profits were indeed affected in L.A., New York actually exceeded expectations. Those within the film industry are also concerned that early Halloween celebrations might be diverting people’s attention. It’s not unusual for third installments to experience a decline, but those involved with Venom are particularly unhappy about the extent of the drop-off.
In North America during 2018, the initial release of “Venom” broke an October record by earning $80.2 million. However, this box office title was dethroned in 2019 by “Joker,” which grossed $96.2 million. More recently, in October 2021, “Let There Be Carnage” debuted and took in $90 million, providing a significant boost to struggling theater owners recovering from the pandemic and marking a major success for Sony Pictures.
In international markets, the movie “The Last Dance” is projected to surpass predictions, earning approximately $180 million globally with an opening of $128 million, which is 5% more than its sequel. Notably, it’s anticipated to bring in a substantial $45 million from China alone.
Venom: The Last Dance is highly anticipated to take the top spot both domestically and internationally. Initially, its production cost was around $130 million, not including promotional expenses.
The series hasn’t garnered much praise from critics; the most recent addition was given a 37% rating by them on Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, the latest movie received a B- grade (which is the worst for the franchise) in terms of audience feedback on CinemaScore.
As a gamer, I’m pumped for “Venom 3,” directed by the talented Kelly Marcel! Once again, Tom Hardy slips into the iconic role of our symbiotic friend. Interestingly, not only is he the star, but he also collaborated with Marcel on the script, as they’ve been creative partners for quite some time now. Excitingly, this is her directorial debut in a full-length feature film!
In its second release, the movie “Smile 2,” produced by Paramount and Temple Hill, is performing strongly and is projected to secure a second-place position, earning approximately $10.3 million. This brings its total domestic gross to $41.6 million over a span of 10 days.
Making its way towards a potential Oscar nomination is Edward Berger’s film, Conclave, which opened nationwide this weekend alongside other new releases. This highly-regarded movie, set within the Vatican and revolving around the election of a new pope, is projected to earn an estimated $6.5 million from 1,753 cinemas, making it the most successful opening yet for a specialty film competing in this year’s awards season.
As a gamer, I’m super excited to share that I recently learned about an upcoming movie I can’t wait to watch! It’s been created and funded by FilmNation and Indian Paintbrush, boasting an incredible cast led by Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. Keeping up with the trend of top-notch productions, Focus Features will be distributing this film. Can’t wait to see it on the big screen!
Numbers will be updated Sunday morning.
