As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of comics under my belt, I must say that the ongoing saga between Venom and Spider-Man has always been a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions. The symbiotic relationship (or lack thereof) between these two iconic characters is as captivating as it is volatile.
The dynamic between Venom and Spider-Man is captivating, yet the alien symbiote often serves as a relentless, lethal nuisance for our friendly neighborhood webslinger. Their tale began in the comics of “Secret Wars” #8, where they initially met, but it truly gained momentum in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #252 when Spider-Man refused the symbiote’s attempt to take control. However, there were some positive aspects, as Spider-Man’s encounter with the Venom symbiote resulted in him obtaining an impressive costume — which he continues to wear in Al Ewing and Iban Coello’s “Venom War” #1.
In the narrative titled “Venom War,” Peter Parker, often at odds with the symbiotic alien, finds themselves united in a common goal to combat a greater threat. The symbiote’s most renowned host, Eddie Brock, who goes by the title “King of Black,” controls a multitude of symbiotes now. However, Eddie’s son, Dylan Brock, aspires to inherit the Venom identity. Yet, the desire for Venom’s power is not Dylan’s sole motivation; it’s a more intricate situation than that. Tragically, only one can claim the Venom identity, and they are prepared to engage in a fierce battle to secure it.
The upcoming conflict, titled “Venom War,” is setting up a significant showdown between father and son which could alter the destiny of Venom. This confrontation promises to be intense. However, Eddie and Dylan face a potential obstacle: Spider-Man. It appears that the symbiote bonding Venom and Peter has an unbreakable connection – but this time, their relationship seems unique.
Venom War #1 features symbiote Spider-Man… and pro wrestling
In an exclusive sneak peek from “Venom War” #1 (written by Al Ewing, illustrated by Iban Coello, colored by Frank D’Armata, and lettered by VC’s Ariana Maher), Eddie Brock and his symbiote companions find themselves in the Grand Garden Arena of New York City. The narrative begins with strange creatures engaging in wrestling bouts, much like Spider-Man squaring off against renowned wrestlers such as Crusher Hogan and Bonesaw McGraw in both comics and films. This event is reminiscent of a specific homage to Randy Savage’s performance in Sam Raimi’s original “Spider-Man” movie. In this instance, Symbiote Smith (also known as The Klyntarian Nightmare) was set to wrestle Gator in a fixed death match, but the celebration is disrupted when multiple versions of Eddie Brock appear through a time rift and become intrigued by Smith.
As I sit back and catch a wrestling match on TV, trying to unwind after a long day, suddenly, my peaceful evening is disrupted by the intrusion of multiple Eddie Brocks in the ring. But little did I know, trouble was just getting started. Before I could even process what was happening, Venom crashes into my apartment, catching me off guard. It seems like neither of us had anticipated this unexpected reunion. Scroll through the pictures below and see if you can piece together what’s going on.
What does the symbiote want with Spider-Man in Venom War?
As a gamer, I can’t help but be captivated by Al Ewing’s Marvel tales, brimming with mind-bending cosmic concepts. His unique touch is evident in his “Venom” series, where in issue #35, Eddie Brock finds himself kicked out of the Time Stream by Meridius due to a spat with Carnage that led to a mess in the Garden of Time. To put it simply, things got a bit chaotic!
Based on what we’ve seen, the tense encounter between Venom and Peter Parker in “Venom War” #1 appears to stem from the confusion caused by time-travel. Their dialogue recalls their interaction in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #252, but with a significant twist: this time, Venom is more mature, thoughtful, and less eager to corrupt his host. It remains uncertain whether Spider-Man will yield to the temptations that come with his symbiote, or what part he’ll play in the upcoming battle between Eddie and Dylan.
“Venom War” by Al Ewing, Iban Coello, Frank D’Armata, and VC’s Ariana Maher will hit retail stores and online platforms on Wednesday, August 7.
