Venom: The Last Dance Ending, Explained

As a longtime fan of Marvel Comics and the Venom series, I must say that the latest film, Venom: The Last Dance, has left me both satisfied and intrigued. It’s always interesting to see how characters evolve, and the mysterious figure played by Reid Scott certainly adds a layer of mystery to the storyline.

This article reveals SPOILERS for the final film in the current Venom trilogy, “Venom: The Last Dance,” which concludes the story that began with 2018’s “Venom” and continued in 2021’s “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.” In this third movie featuring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, there is a strong emphasis on wrapping up the tale, suggesting that Venom and Eddie Brock may not survive until the end of the film. However, it also hints at potential future films focusing on Venom, other Symbiotes, or other characters from Sony’s Spider-Man universe.

Breakdown and Implications of “Venom: The Last Dance” Ending

Is Venom Dead?

In the swansong of the Venom movie series, titled Venom: The Last Dance, it has been promoted that this will be the concluding installment, with Tom Hardy stating this is his last portrayal as Venom. Given the film’s ending, this assertion appears to hold true. Essentially, either Eddie Brock or Venom must perish to prevent the malevolent symbiote deity Knull from obtaining the Codex that can liberate him from captivity. Despite the united power of the U.S. military, a group of symbiotes, and Venom, they fail to halt Knull’s Xenophage horde, as these destructible forces continuously regenerate themselves whenever they are vanquished.

In a selfless act, Venom understands he must give up his life to stop the recurring Xenophage. He guides the Xenophage towards an acid tank from earlier in the movie, where Area 51’s remains were dissolved. Venom combines with the Xenophages and uses Rex Strickland (Chiwetel Ejiofor) to activate the acid. As a final gesture of protection, Venom covers Eddie with a vault door before saying “see you later,” asking Eddie not to forget him. A mortally wounded Strickland then sets off a grenade, seemingly eradicating both Venom and the Xenophage, as well as the Codex.

After waking up in a hospital, Eddie Brock is informed by a military general that the charges from Venom: Let There Be Carnage have been dropped, making him a free man. Later, he travels to New York City and pays a visit to the Statue of Liberty – a place he had discussed visiting with Venom throughout the movie. As he reflects on his companion, Eddie mutters, “I’ll never forget you, buddy,” as the credits begin to roll, leaving viewers to wonder if Venom’s story may not be over just yet.

In the movie’s final scene before the credits roll, the bartender and a fragment of the symbiote once possessed by Venom are transported to Area 55. The bartender exits a cave to find Area 55 in ruins and ventures into the desert. During this time, the vial containing the Venom symbiote piece from the bar is shattered. A cockroach approaches it before the screen goes dark. Given that Venom had taken control of various creatures throughout the film, it seems likely that a small part of Venom lived on, hinting at his potential return. However, whether he will reunite with Eddie (Brock) is yet to be determined.

Knull Will Return, Maybe

As a die-hard fan, I must confess that while trailers for “Venom: The Last Dance” have built up anticipation for Knull (portrayed by Andy Serkis), it’s essential to manage expectations. Although Knull opens the film with an origin story monologue, he unfortunately remains confined throughout the movie, trapped on Klyntar – a prison created by symbiotes for their creator.

The mid-credits scene contradicts this notion. Even though Venom has perished, Knull declares ominously, “Your champion has fallen. The King in Black has awoken. Your world shall be consumed by fire, and you will bear witness!” He then fixes his gaze on the camera, offering viewers a first-time glimpse of Knull’s visage in the film. While it remains unclear how Knull can escape now that the Codex has been destroyed, it is evident that this is not the last we see of Knull.

Mentioning Knull as “The King in Black” is a clear allusion to the 2020 comic book series titled “The King in Black“. In this series, Knull led an attack on Earth, engaging in battles against Venom, The Avengers, the X-Men, and numerous others. Sony Pictures aims for Knull to serve as a threat akin to Thanos within their interconnected franchise, which includes characters such as Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, and possibly Madame Web.

Wait…Is Dr. Dan Lewis Evil?

In “Venom: The Last Dance”, a mysterious figure is frequently seen monitoring various screens, apparently overseeing Imperium, the organization managing Area 55, which appears to be where Rex Strickland works. This character remains unidentified throughout the movie, as he is consistently depicted from behind or shrouded in darkness. Nevertheless, his voice and occasional side profile suggest strongly that this enigmatic figure is none other than actor Reid Scott. For those with a memory of the earlier “Venom” films, Reid Scott may ring a bell, as he portrayed Dr. Dan Lewis, the former partner and later fiancé of Eddie Brock’s ex-girlfriend, Anne Weying.

The fact that Reid Scott is in “Venom: The Last Dance” is puzzling, given that his characters, Dan Lewis and Williams Anne Weying, are nowhere to be found in the film, not even mentioned. Could it possibly mean that the seemingly good-natured character who provided comic relief was actually a hidden villain all along? However, since the movie doesn’t clarify this mystery, it could simply be a temporary role. If so, casting Reid Scott for this part seems rather strange. It might connect to “Kraven the Hunter” later on.

The film “Venom: The Last Dance” presents an unusual scenario for many superhero trilogies since it carries a conclusive feel, yet hints at future movies. Despite Venom apparently meeting his end, traces of his symbiote imply that he may persist. Although Eddie Brock and Venom could reunite in the future, given Tom Hardy’s statement that he’ll only return to the franchise if Venom faces Spider-Man, this might be their last encounter. Sony Pictures may keep them apart until they confront Knull, at which point they will likely unite once more.

In the interim, it appears that Sony Pictures may have identified a new character bonded with a symbiote to continue the Venom series. At the end of the movie, Area 55 scientist Dr. Payne (portrayed by Juno Temple) bonds with a purple symbiote. Since Dr. Payne was struck by lightning as a child, she seems to have an electrical charge within her. This charge transfers to her symbiote, granting it super speed. Given the purple color and long hair of this symbiote, it is likely that this is Agony. Thus, Dr. Payne/Agony could become the new symbiote hero in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, potentially joining forces with characters like Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and the three Spider-Women to combat Knull when he arrives on Earth.

It appears that for the time being, we’re saying goodbye to Venom, but who knows, there might be a chance for him to reappear. Perhaps it could happen during the massive multiverse team-up in Avengers: Secret Wars, where Eddie Brock and Venom could share the screen with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in an epic concluding battle.
