Venom: The Last Dance Heading Towards $65 Million Opening Weekend

Venom: The Last Dance Heading Towards $65 Million Opening Weekend

As a die-hard fan of comic book movies, I have to admit that I am rather disappointed with the box office performance of Venom: The Last Dance. After the excitement and anticipation built around Joker: Folie à Deux, I was hoping for a much stronger opening weekend for this sequel.

It seems that the projected earnings for “Venom: The Last Dance” are falling short compared to the opening weekends of its preceding films. Following the box office flop known as “Joker: Folie à Deux,” cinemas were probably expecting a significant comeback at the box office with the sequel to “Venom.” Yet, much like “Joker 2,” having a successful precursor does not guarantee a powerful debut for a new installment. Instead, it looks like “The Last Dance” will struggle to match the success of its previous films.

According to Variety, the upcoming movie “Venom: The Last Dance” is projected to earn around $65 million during its opening weekend in 2024. Although this would rank as the eighth highest debut of the year, it’s significantly lower than Venom’s initial $80 million haul and the $90 million “Let There Be Carnage” made in 2021. In essence, if these estimates are correct, “The Last Dance” will open $15 million less than its predecessor and a whopping $25 million short of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.” Despite an expected $85 million from international markets, and a potential worldwide opening weekend total of $150 million, it would still fall well short of the first film’s impressive $205 million earnings. It’s worth noting that “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” experienced a slower international release due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Should The Last Dance fall short at the box office, it would further highlight a pattern of disappointing returns for sequels of popular superhero movies. Movies like Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Marvels, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Joker: Folie à Deux, and potentially Venom: The Last Dance have collectively suggested a waning enthusiasm among audiences towards these superhero follow-ups. Nonetheless, The Last Dance still has ample time to rebound. As it stands, it’s the only significant film set for release in theaters over the next three weeks, as studios aim to steer clear of releasing movies during the 2024 presidential election.

Venom: The Last Dance Lacks a Strong Hook for Audiences

One potential drawback for “Venom: The Last Dance” might be its lack of a strong marketing hook compared to previous Venom films. The 2018 version of Venom, being the standalone film of a widely beloved Marvel character, benefited from the heightened interest in superhero movies at that time. Audiences were eager to see if Venom would tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In contrast, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” introduced Carnage, one of Marvel’s most iconic villains, as a way to attract viewers and establish itself as a major blockbuster title following the COVID-19 pandemic. Temporarily holding the record for the largest opening weekend after theater shutdowns due to COVID-19, it eventually lost this distinction to another Sony production, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which incorporated Venom in its post-credit scene.

Despite promoting Venom: The Last Dance as the concluding journey, some viewers find it lacking. Introducing Knull as a new antagonist in Marvel Comics doesn’t have the same allure as Carnage did for many. It’s also possible that general audiences are aware that these Venom movies don’t link up with the MCU Spider-Man films, starring Tom Holland. Contrary to speculations, Venom won’t probably appear alongside Peter Parker or any other incarnation of Spider-Man in the upcoming film. Additionally, Sony Pictures has introduced Morbius and Madame Web between Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Venom: The Last Dance, which might be damaging to their Spider-Man franchise. So far, the initial feedback from fans and critics on Venom: The Last Dance has been positive, which could boost its box office performance in the coming weeks. However, it still presents an image that superhero films are no longer the bankable blockbusters they were merely three years ago.
