As a long-time fan of the Marvel Universe and a connoisseur of action-packed films, I am beyond excited for the upcoming release of “Venom: The Last Dance”. Having followed Eddie Brock’s symbiotic journey since the first film, I have high hopes that this third installment will not only break box office records but also cement Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Venom as a cinematic legend.
The Last Dance might earn between $80 million and $120 million in its opening weekend domestically (according to Boxoffice Pro).
Opening Weekend Numbers for Sony’s Spider-Man Spin-Offs
- Venom ($80.3 million)
- Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($90 million)
- Morbius ($39 million)
- Madame Web ($15.3 million)
Currently, “Let There Be Carnage” is leading in its opening weekend earnings. Interestingly, the original “Venom” managed to earn almost an identical total domestically as “Venom 2” did ($213.51 million vs $213.55 million), despite earning $10 million less during its initial release in 2018. However, globally, the original “Venom” came close to reaching the billion-dollar mark ($856.1 million), while the sequel only amassed $501.5 million worldwide.
Various Variables Will Determine Venom 3’s Box Office Fate
To date this fall, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has secured the highest box office debut in September with a whopping $111 million. Yet, if “Venom: The Last Dance” manages to push itself towards the $120-million mark as predicted, it could easily outshine its competition. Despite some unfavorable reviews, Eddie Brock (Hardy) and his latest escapade in “Venom” still seem poised to break records as Sony’s most successful Spidey spin-off.
2018 saw a harsh criticism of the initial Venom movie, with it receiving just a 30% rating on the Tomatometer based on 363 reviews. In contrast, its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, earned a more favorable 57% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 282 critics. Interestingly, these Spider-Man spin-offs have primarily relied on fan support to pack theaters. To begin with, both Venom and its sequel received identical “B+” CinemaScores. Furthermore, both the original Venom (with an 80% rating) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (with a 84% rating) have shown strong audience support on the Popcornmeter (formerly the RT audience score).
The Motion Picture Association (MPAA) rating assigned to the third Venom movie might impact how many people ultimately watch The Last Dance. While the first two installments received PG-13 ratings, there’s a possibility that The Last Dance could receive an R-rating instead.
Despite the occasional successes of films like Deadpool, Wolverine, and Joker, which bucked the trend by earning billions at the box office despite their R ratings, it’s worth noting that between 1995 and 2024, PG-13 films accounted for a staggering 48.28% of the market share (according to The Numbers). On the other hand, R-rated movies during this period held just 26.24% of the market share.
Firstly, let’s remember that the forecast for The Last Dance‘s $80 million to $120 million opening weekend is not always accurate. For example, Boxoffice Pro predicted that Transformers One would earn between $40 million and $50 million, but it actually made just $26 million during its premiere. However, Eddie and his anti-hero character are eager to tackle any challenges as they aim to break the record for the most successful Spider-Man spin-off.
