As a gamer who grew up with countless hours spent in front of the TV watching superhero shows and movies, I can wholeheartedly relate to Sasha Calle’s emotions. Landing a role in a beloved franchise like DCEU is a dream come true for any fan, and it’s heartbreaking when that dream feels cut short.
The superhero genre has been dominating the entertainment industry for years, with a number of cinematic universes currently in play. The DCEU (which can be streamed with a Max subscription) ended with Aquaman 2, and co-CEO James Gunn is forming a new interconnected franchise. Fans are eager to see the first slate of projects titled Gods and Monsters, but they’re still reflecting on the DCEU. And The Flash’s Sasha Calle didn’t hold back while reacting to her Latina Supergirl being recast as the shared universe was scrapped.
In the cast of “The Flash,” Ezra Miller took the lead, but also featured two distinct versions of Batman and introduced Sasha Calle as Supergirl. Unfortunately, Calle’s debut as Supergirl was brief, leaving one to ponder what it must have felt like for her. During an interview with THR, the 29-year-old actress shared her thoughts upon securing the Kryptonian role. She expressed:
I felt incredibly attached to that character, we often discussed her potential storylines. When I agreed to take on the role, it was for a multi-film contract, which is typical for a franchise. Therefore, it was extremely disappointing and perplexing when things didn’t work out as planned.
Landing a significant role in a superhero series can extend over many years, as demonstrated by original Avengers like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans. Similarly, Callie secured a contract for recurring roles within the DCEU, anticipating that The Flash would be her introductory performance as Supergirl. Regrettably, it turned out to be her sole appearance as the DC legend.
The enthusiasm of the “The Young and The Restless” actress for her DC character was evident during promotions. For instance, Sasha Calle expressed great affection for her Supergirl Barbie doll, frequently carrying it with her during interviews. In a later interview, she shared her sentiments about her short term as a queer, Latina superhero, saying: “I felt incredibly proud and excited to be part of this role.
Reflecting on it now, I consider it incredibly magnificent. As some have argued that a unique Latina girl like myself wouldn’t become Supergirl, but I proved them wrong, and nobody can undo that accomplishment for me. What truly matters to me is that I made an impact, and many people resonated with her, admiring and loving her. Whether you recognized yourself in my character or not, she touched the hearts of numerous individuals.
Over the last several years, much discussion has centered around the significance of representation within media. Sasha Calle recognizes the impact of observing someone similar to oneself on-screen, and was thrilled to embody a heroic role model as a queer Latina portraying Supergirl.
It seems a fresh Supergirl is stepping into the spotlight in the DCEU. Milly Alcock, who gained fame from ‘House of the Dragon’, has been chosen to play the part, but it’s not clear if she will be part of the Superman team. As for Melissa Benoist (Calle), it appears her time as Supergirl may have come to an end.
Mark your calendars! The new Superman movie is set to hit cinemas on July 11th. If you’re eagerly awaiting a cinema visit, make sure to note down the upcoming movie releases in 2025 for your New Year’s movie-going plans.
